Yes and no. Not really. Actually, just no.
I wasn't a fan of flags suddenly appearing back then either, and did at times find myself torn about what it meant.
But the intended message, whether I agreed or disagreed with it, was completely fucking different, as was the tone of it. You'd have to be completely blinkered or malicious to argue otherwise.
I would have been happier without flags being flown, and while there would have been negative instances I'm sure, and bad aftertaste, it was started and championed and implemented in a completely different way.
And the actual reported instances of trouble and abuse, the only real rioting, arrests and notable trouble, happened to (unfortunately) be on the unionist side, under the banner of the Union Jack flag, which you will fine well know.
Without derailing the discussion though, can pick up on a relevant thread if you intend on growing arms and legs from it.
