General UFC thread

I've just got him at 6/4 on PaddyPower.
I can't see this going any other way than a Mendes domination...

McGregor could knock him out, unlikely though, Mendes has seriously quick hands and won't spend much time in range unless he's tying McGregor up. The prices allow for a Mendes win/McGregor knockout win hedged bet though which is the safest option imo and should return a profit.

Now I admit I don't know much about UFC but decided to watch it due to all the hype. What I couldn't work out was why Mendes was just standing there flat footed waiting to be hit whenever they were stood up. No defence or anything he looked absolutely shattered from the beginning.

Mendes was completely gassed by the kicks of Mcgregor. Also if you watch Mcrgregor's style is completely unorthodox in comparison to a lot of fighters out there. It is hard to train for someone like Mcgregor and although Mendes had the best gameplan and was executing it Mcgregors standup is just so ridiculously good that Mendes could do nothing.

Oh and I have to say UFC shits all over boxing!
Hard to disagree with that. There is something gladiatorial about the UFC, and the warriors competing are incredible athletes.

Kudos to Conor McGregor. He certainly talked the talk and then lived up to it.

By the way it was interesting to hear Dana White praise Garry Cook for his input into the event as a UFC executive. He sure knows how to sell an event!

That kind of pressure from McGregor is rare in MMA. Fighters tend to stand at a distance. When Mendes tried to move, Conor would cut him off so it looked like Mendes was just standing there.

dont usually watch ufc but that fight was amazing absolutely shit on the maywaether boxing cash cow

Mayweather picks and chooses his opponents. His fights are now much less a sport and more a sports spectacle. Shame as when boxing is good with two evenly matched guys it is great.

Looks like they've both had better days. What a fight though.

Conor is gold to the UFC he is the UFCs Naz. Conor would sell out Croke Park in any fight I hope he fights Aldo as thats the fight we all want to see doubt that will happen in Croke Park but if it does it would be the record breaking highest attending fight in UFC history. UFC / MMA is huge in Ireland all of the top cards are sold out in minutes its a joke trying to get a ticket. But congrats to Conor I will be watching it again I only seen his fight but heard the card was brilliant.

The card was brilliant. If you can watch it you should.

Conor got some decent kicks from his shin into Mendes stomach... this really takes the juice out of you.
Also if you remember right from the start Conor jumped straight into a flying knee, literally this is a no-no - you're asking to get knocked out but Mendes has a poor reach so wouldn't be able to catch Conor.

Conor is so unpredictable it's hard to fight against someone who is willing to be knocked out if this makes sense?
if they are so offensive yes it leaves them open to attack but if you aren't that kind of fighter ie; a boxer/muay thai guy then you'll struggle catching them especially if they continue with pace/unorthodox style.

As for the age old comparison of Boxing and MMA.
Totally unfair to compare - Boxing is a sport with specific rules, it's like comparing Rugby with Footy.

You could be Mike Tyson the boxer (prime) and a little 5yr old boy could kick him in his balls in a "fight" and Mike would be crying on the floor in pain.

Whereas in the boxing ring, you aren't allowed to do this so obviously Mike Tyson would win.

Boxing is a beautiful art which can be implemented into MMA, as long as the boxer is taught a good takedown defence (sprawl)

it's in the UFC name... Fighting. a fight means literally anything goes, although there are rules like low blows, strikes to the back of the head etc but Boxing should be respected as being one individual art, just like the hundreds of many other martial arts.
