General Videogame Thread

Why would you buy a digital over one with a disc drive with the exception of a cheaper price? I literally know nothing about these things these days.

I'd be Fifa, GTA, a racing game and maybe one or two others. Wrestling perhaps too. But mainly football.

Having things on disc means you can buy, sell and swap games + use any backward compatible old discs. If you go digital you have only the option of buying the download from the official store.

The future is digital but some people like to have something tangible and like to be able to use their old games.

Also be aware that going digital only reduces your buying power. You're restricted to digital only outlets, and for some titles, particularly the smaller ones, I have only ever seen the PlayStation Store carrying them, so you pay whatever they list them at.

With a disc you can still take advantage of digital sales, plus grabbing discs when on offer or even second hand.

A key example of this is pre orders. Sony will want £60 or so digitally, whereas on disc you may pay £40 for pre order as Amazon, Argos, game, Tesco, asda, shopto and others compete for your order. So far Sony have been restrictive over availability of digital keys via non Sony outlets and I don't see this changing. They have a monopoly on digital ps4 sales. Microsoft isn't so bad as deals do crop up for keys on cdkeys and others, but it's a similar situation.

Personally I have too much of a backlog, and also too many bad launch console experiences (2 x red ring of death xbox 360s and a yellow light of death PS3) to jump right in, although admittedly this generation have resorted confidence in hardware build quality.

Happy to wait a year or two.

I think you only upgrade when a game comes along that you really want and need the latest box for.

Can buy digital copies cheaper online, don't have to pay the price from the official store, and haven't for years.

digital games are a rip off ? unless you can resell them then you don't own them, also you have to pay a subscription fee to log on the main sites then download them onto your account and not the game console ?

always buy a disc game that way you get a chance to sell it on, ok you will lose money but its better than losing the full price of a download copy

what the main game console should do is download the game to the console and its part of your console forever and if you sell the console then its got games built in

Right so I have stuck with Crusader Kings 3 and put in a good number of hours and get whats going on.

Its still absolutely shit. I really have no idea why people are loving this game. I'm a big Stellaris fan but this game is about marrying your children, trying to murder people and chasing armies about a map. Its bloody awful. Its a glorified family simulator?

Too many repetative pop ups constantly interrupting game play . Don't like conquering a full island then just giving it all back as if nothing just happened. Similar to the claim system in Stellaris, but somehow worse! Just seems totally poor. No proper army building or conquests, the map gets really messy after a while and the game just completely kills off alliances once a king or queen dies, which is again madness.

Probably the worst grand strategy game I've played. Completely and utterly underwhelmed. Picked this over Iron Harvest aswell...fuck.

Football Manager 2020 is free on epic games store usual price is £39-99 grab it while the offer is on folks

Have there been any good racing games recently? Used to love the original gran tirismo, but it’s been an age since I’ve played one.

Played about 10 hours of Stellaris and really struggling to get into it.

Problem with digital only is the games are increasing digitally to £70+ per game. So from what they lose on hardware they will soon make up in money from their digital store. Also means no more buying second hand games for a fraction of the cost. I may buy the disk version just so I can have a blu-ray player as well.

True but I just looked through my back catalogue and the last disk game I bought was GTA5 about 5 years ago so I think digital makes sense for someone like me.

Played through a few level of Half Life 2 last night. This is one shooter I missed out on playing 15-20 years ago. Probably because there were so many at that time, Quake, Doom, Fear, Far Cry , MOH, COD, Deus Ex. Had a lot of fun smashing crates with a crowbar. Took me while to work out how to deal with those creatures dangling from the roof .

I'm not sure I've posted my PS5 stance, but I'm definitely waiting until after christmas, probably the 2nd or 3rd wave of the machine. Nothing announced for launch excites me, I only really want Ghost of Tsushima and TLOU2 for PS5, as I've purposely not bought them on PS4

EDIT: Also going for the disc version. Absolutely no chance I'm paying an extra £20-30 per game to have the extra burden of downloading it and my ISP moaning about my usage.

I managed to snag a disc version, I’m selling my PS4 for £104 at cex so brings it down to the digital version price I’m happy with that best of both worlds and 4K player to boot. Also going for a new PC as well as mine is dying in its arse, the new nvidia 3000 series look great and with the steaming app included I might delve into that a bit as well. Just don’t tell the wife

There’s a few PS4 games that I really enjoy, or would enjoy but for the loading times. As an example I love Cricket 19 but there’s a 2 or 3 minute load time for each game which ruins it for me. On the PS5, the exact same game will have almost instant load times.

That alone makes it worthwhile for me (plus I’ve just paid for my pre order in full as Qatar will run out in short order).

Having an interesting chat with a very old friend from back in the JTAG-RGH/Firmware flashing days (i'd just dug out my glitched 360 and wanted to play Fall out New Vegas and the DLC) He was a bit of a wizard of the scene and told me people were running all kinds of unsigned code on Nintendo Switch...how did they defeat this consoles security?...by shorting out to pins in the joycon area and getting it into recovery mode. I imagine that would save parents £100s and cost the console dearly in pirated games.

Pardon?
