George Floyd murder | Clashes between US police and protestors

So what are you saying? That we shouldn't be in lockdown and socially distancing? Shall we just reopen everything? As long as we all wear masks we'll be OK.

I simply asked, if you say some people were wearing masks(which I don't think was a thing at the time of the festival) and some people weren't, which were the one that got ill after attending the race?

hats off to the police for the restraint they showed, if I was in charge I would of baton charged the bell ends

That is becasue we have the greatest police service in the world. They don't get everything right but if it had to happen i would rather be arrested by a british copper than one of any other nationality.

Black lives matter. Except those black lives that end as result of catching covid yesterday. Those black lives can fuck off. Apparently.

You started your argument on an assumptive premise and blanketed all the protesters with the same accusation.

Not sure why your wife has anything to do with the discussion, but it will be her to attend to her own protection as best she can, so washing hands, changing clothes and showering is on her, is it not?

Self regulation as you say and I said.
I didn’t actually start any argument and assumed nothing about the protesters.
I merely addressed your reply to someone else you were arguing with, that his reply was silly.

I am pointing out to you that the assumption you are rallying against, by stating that all these protesters could have adhered to the strictest guidelines in hygiene before and after their march applies to any event, including football matches, if you want to stretch this hypothesis that far.

There are either social distancing regulations or there aren’t.

Otherwise you have a free for all.
And the point about my wife returning to work should be evident from what I wrote.

Everyone has their own particular circumstances family-wise and as good a cause as any of these marches are, if you are going to allow people mass gather then you are relying on people individually to be socially conscious and not everyone will be.
It is why we had the lockdown in the first place. Protecting the vulnerable and the health services as well as other front line essential staff.

It’s not rocket science and you don’t need to be on one side or another of a racism debate to acknowledge this too.

Regulations, in this particular case of COVID, are suggestions unenforceable by law. They are simply the best known guidelines to follow for individuals.

Literally, all I was saying is that you cannot assume people do not know what their responsibilities are. The likes of Jack Grealish are a perfect example of knowing what he SHOULD do regarding safety.

The onus is on him to do so.

I’ll be honest with you, things in the UK are different to Ireland and other than the fact that what they do over there will almost definitely effect us over here as we have a land border in Northern Ireland and free movement of people, they don’t affect us.
I have issues with many aspects of how Covid was handled in the UK and don’t believe they have been very clear in regulations all along the way.
By and large though we have balanced the approach between The Republic and the Northern Ireland Assembly as best we can trying to protect the island as a whole.

So that aside, I don’t care what the UK decide to do.
Here in the Republic however we have managed this better than expected TBH.
It is hard to believe but we only have circa 260 ICU beds. We coopted a number of private hospital ICUs but didn’t need to use them, but the fact remains that our health service was already strained to 125% capacity as it is. We would be swamped very easily if Covid wasn’t managed.

So I do have a problem with any march to the American embassy in Dublin, looking at the numbers that turned up.

Each country worldwide can decide for themselves what stages they are at in recovery whether they want to allow mass gatherings or not. We’re not there yet and this shouldn’t have happened. Other demonstrations of solidarity were used during lockdown and with some imagination the organisers of this march could have had a coordinated nationwide demonstration that observed the current social distancing regulations.

It is too quick and easy to mirror what is going on all over America, though. That’s the optic they are looking for.
Doesn’t sit well with me.

I don’t think in America it would have been possible to justify not letting these people demonstrate and protest, given what happened to GF, what has been happening for decades, centuries, and also how we saw white gimps being treated when they occupied state buildings openly armed with semi automatic rifles etc, because they wanted a haircut.

We all support and empathise with the demonstrations but it is likely there will be Covid repercussions from it.
We don’t know for certain but it is likely.

Here in Ireland we are not equipped to deal with a spike, until we have the infrastructure in place with testing etc before the nation opens up again.

That is why I am against this form of demonstration here, regardless of the cause it is for.
The wife’s father visits the hospital for dialysis three days a week. He’s our number one priority at the moment.

I appreciate you've spoken your mind.

So depressing - loads on social media lapping up the cenotaph graffiti, perfect for the racists to generalise all the protesters based on this image.

I was saying this to my wife last night. The rioters have played right into the alt right’s hands, and it’s all over this thread. And, infuriatingly, the social distancing will be used as a get out of jail free card for Johnson and his set of clueless jokers.

@Bigga

Are you well mate?

I’ve just come back from a bit of a break on here and wanted to get your perspective.

I want to be constructive and hear from someone it’s more personal to, despite the general topic being all of our problems.

What’s your view on the issues in the UK and if you became PM tomorrow what would you change?

Specifically the racism aspects I mean.
