It's being used to make sure the onfield ref doesn't look like an idiot rather than to let them get the correct calls.

The game is faster than ever, refs need some help, there's no shame in not being able to see what happened on first glance. Stop protecting these underperforming refs and start consistently enforcing the rules. (Not a chance in hell, I know, but we can dream)

Insidious isnt it! VAR doesnt show the ref up and in turn the refs performance helps VAR run a 99% accurate game (Or whatever correct decision improvement target they mentioned)

I bet post-VAR introduction that refs are keeping a lot more of their bonuses
