Gerry Creaney

Yes, Alan Ball certainly had an eye for a top player ... Gerry Creaney, Martin "Buster" Phillips, Nigel Clough, Michael Frontzeck .... the list of quality signings he brought into the club is (sadly) endless.

I can't imagine how we ended-up getting relegated.

And to think that these days we grumble that David Silva's had an off-day, or that Yaya gave the ball away once in his 100 passes.

I remember he went off on loan somewhere (Burnley?) and scored 6 or 7 goals in as many games, then we had an injury crisis and had to recall him.........needless to say he was absolute dog on his return.........

Think the Canadian Charcoal Pit opposite the Orange Tree were particularly sad when we eventually sold him

I remember at maine road, someone hit a high, crossfield ball to him.he was on the corner of the penalty box (north stand, kippax side),and out of all the options available to him ie. head it across the box, bring it down on your chest etc.etc. he decided a bicycle kick was the way forward.
unfortunately by the time he'd adjusted himself into position, and somehow thrown his leg above his head, the ball had long since gone past him and out for a throw.
after the ground stopped shaking, from 10 stone 10 pounds!!!!! of beer gut hitting it.he managed to drag himself off the deck, and stood to his feet laughing his head off!

It was one of them moments, where the half the crowd are laughing and the other half going mental at the useless idiot.

I remember being at St James Park in 1995 when the Pie-man notched a late header when we were being spanked 0-3 with ten men. He went absolutely ballistic with joy - as if he had scored the winner. It was very noticeable that he played at half the speed of the rest of the players on show - and as for his performance in his start at home to Chelsea, in midfield (!), words failed me, as he tried to score from about 40 yards. Did he ever have a good game?

I took my mates young lad to get some signatures and while waiting in line for Kinky to put his signature on a lovely picture Gerry appeared from nowhere and scribbled away on it much to the dissapointment of the young lad.I quickly said to him come on Gerry there's no chance of you getting away with being Kinky on the pitch so there's no chance off it it either. To his credit he laughed it off and got Kinky to sign a few bits for the lad.
He was never 10 stone 10 either maybe when he was 14

That was his real problem, a total lack of fitness, on the very odd occasion when he could keep up with play he was a decent finisher - the winner at Leeds in the 95/96 season springs to mind.
