Getting past Brum on a monday morning

I drove down the m42 last weekend, there's roadworks where the m40 peels away, it was as bad as m6/m5 ever is, so check before you do that because you're adding distance.
Was going to post this earlier. M42 is having the smart motorway upgrade between J3 and J5 and makes an already slow area even slower.
I’d stick with the M6 onto M5 and hope for the best… imho of course

Hopefully get a quick answer and ill delete

Heading down south on monday morning and not done the dreaded M6 /M5 around birmingham for years

Is it still a nightmare?

Anyone do the trip regular let me know what time (morning) id need to be passing through without hitting major traffic on the M6 southbound ?
I was working on HS2 before Xmas last year and the traffic starts to build up where you mention from 6 15am. Leave Manchester at 4.00am and you will be good. After 4.30am it will be busy and After 5.00am sat in traffic.

Yeah I was wondering if the OP might not be better off sticking with the M6. Once upon a time it used to be that the M42 only got ugly when there was something big on at the nec but these days it seems to be a constant.
It’s a fucking nightmare.

Depends on the time. Junctions 10 and 8 can also be a nightmare in the mornings. Once you get past junction 8 it’s usually ok. I used to leave mum and dad’s in South Manchester no later than 04:30 to miss the build up. If you don’t hit junction 8 before 6am it really starts to build up.
