??? Thats a pathetic response and of course avoiding the point altogether.

OK simple question and a one word answer will suffice. Could Mancini's man management be better?

maybe in different club. at City ? no.

hahaha I didn't know Lancet Fluke is actually Mancio but thanks for explaining:)

forgive me . didnt understood it was a sort of public PM between you and Lancet Fluke

When Given was here he was number 2 to Joe Hart, who could have been injured at any time, so he should have been talking to him of course. Anyway, it's just human decency to commnicate with an experienced 35 year old international keeper who's on the bench for the first time in 15 years.

If you listen to any number of interviews with Given he'll say that while he was disappointed with the decision he knew exactly where he stood.

Don't make this out to be something it's not.

You are asking the impossible here.

All this nonsense about highly paid players not having emotional needs is laughable. They're not robots but human beings and all have different needs. Some will be more self-reliant than others.

And Given shouldn't have to go asking why he wasn't first choice; its common decency that the manager explains that Joe Hart had done well enough to keep the jersey and, being a lot younger, was seen as the future keeper. He should then say that he's happy to keep him as second choice but would understand if he's unhappy and wanted to play regularly.

I've been made redundant twice. The first time it was done quite professionally, I understood the reasons for it and they were happy to meet some of my requests. The second time was the complete opposite, being done very unprofessionally and it wasn't clear why I had been chosen. Which company do you suppose I feel better disposed to?

I've also been in a situation where I was the only internal candidate applying for a big new post. Despite having made a very good impression at the selection centre they decided they weren't going to offer it to any of the other three external candidates or me.

The manager involved, despite only sitting a few feet from me, left me waiting all day to find out. In the end I was so annoyed I went to see her and told her it was unacceptable that she had kept me waiting when she could have told me first thing in the morning.

She was quite embarrassed and agreed with me that she was in the wrong but everyone lost respect for her over it. We still did our jobs but no one was going to run through brick walls for her. If she'd handled it slightly differently then she could have avoided that.

It's little things that can make a big difference. At the business end of the season, the rags will be scrapping for the wins they need because their manager recognises that.

If you talk to Lescott or Viera you'll hear them say that the boss' office door was always open for players to have a chat about any problems they were having. Player's have their part to play; all they have to do is walk through that door and they can have chat if that's what they want.

Not downplaying it, and in an ideal world everyone who leaves the club will leave happily. But do you think your disposition toward either company has any effect on their success?

I also think football is a bit different from your normal 9-5 job. Do you think Given really needed to be told he was second choice to Hart, I would have thought it was fairly obvious and he himself has said in the past that he knew exactly where he stood under Mancini.

Brilliant post, PB. I'd like to add a real-life example.

One of the things I learnt the most from early in my career was this:

When I first got into people management, at a big corporation, I'd become manager of a team. As part of a restructure I had to choose someone to be Team Leader of each of my three teams. All of the staff knew me well , and for two of the teams the choice was obvious.

But for one of the teams it was neck and neck between two people, both of whom I managed very closely and had a strong business relationship with. I made my decision, but as this was a brand new restructure of the company, the MD wanted to announce all these promotions one night at a big company get-together/jolly. I really wanted to talk to the guy who;d been overlooked and explain why - I was still giving him a title of "Senior" which he hadn't had before but he wasn't going to get the job. But I didn't, I obeyed the MD and the whole thing was annnounced to the whole company.

The guy who'd been overlooked - a damn good employee but not quite management - immedaitely left the get together in a fury. He took a week off sick then when he came back handed his notice in. He was absolutely hurt to the quick that things had been handled this way.

I learnt a lot from that. I lost a great employee through not obeying my instincts on man management. People need to be talked to, to have decisons explained clearly and as honestly as you can. That's what gets them bought into you.

When Given left no one had a bad word to say about him, now after one comment you are turning on him like a pack of dogs. I like him and thought he was professional to the end of his career here. No one could deny Mancini's success with our team and I wouldn't change him for anyone but why the outrage at someone pointing out what may be a tiny chink in his armour. Shay worked more closely with him than anyone on here and is giving his opinion on how he felt he was treated. He is not an idiot and would have known why he was replaced with Hart but I don't think it is unreasonable to have expected the manager to have told him personally, not to cuddle him or feed his ego as some are arguing, just as professional courtesy. He answered honestly and he has never shown any bad feeling towards us or the club, he sat on the bench and didn't kick up a fuss when he wasn't sold earlier so let's be adult about this and not get over sensitive. I doubt Mancini was crying into his cornflakes this morning over it.
