Go home America.....You're drunk!!

Once again the establishment "under attack" from youth. And it scares them. Most people featured here are just the mouthpieces and lap dogs of those who hold the reins of power and are scared by the rise of the youth vote or movement - as happened under Labour here. The issue they have that if the movement succeeds then changes to law affecting the constitution will have come from outside the area under their direct control. And that scares them. In American political fashion they have resorted to personal attacks on the protagonists rather than any rational counter argument. As long as this movement continues it will continue to scare them. Its funny how 5m NRA members are holding 325m Americans to ransom !

And remember the people speaking out against these youngsters all staunchly support a president who is a boastful self admitted sexual predator who is fighting off potential law suits from two women - one a porn actress - who claim to have had sex with him whilst his wife was pregnant and then trying to but them off - they are the ones claiming the moral high ground - YCNMTU

What sort of democracy is it when a minority (the NRA) can hold the majority to ransom?
To me, that seems more like a dictatorship.

Agreed 100% I can't help but think the people demanding gun law change are missing a trick. If I was them I would be demanding (dare I say it) a referendum on the issue. This would achieve two things.
1. It would most likely get the result they want because I believe there really is huge support for change.
2. It would force the right wing anti democracy nutters. They talk about good game with rule of law etc but you watch them change their tune if an actual device to get a mandate is even suggested.

does the constitution allow for referendums?

does the constitution allow for referendums?

They just need to make an amendment that allowed them when a majority in both houses felt one was necessary.

The constitution is a living thing, it changes. People think it’s set in stone. Or I should say, the bits they agree with are.

I had a look on Wiki - very complex - seems to vary from state to state - am not sure there is a mechanism on the books for a nationwide Federal referendum - it would have to be done on a state by state basis I think.

Or as an amendment all needed to comply with. Would be difficult but it’s theoretically possible.

To repeal the 2nd Amendment, it would take two-thirds of the House and Senate to vote to propose it, then 3/4 of the states have to ratify it. Never going to happen. To be honest, I'm glad. A simple majority referendum is an inane way to make Federal policy. We have this issue in California all the time with our Prpoposition set. I actually got to vote on whether or not porn actors working in the state should be required to wear condoms in 2016.

The whole point is to elect representatives for us who study the law every day to propose alterations to it, and for those representatives to understand, advocate for and protect the interests of those they represent.

The interpretation of the 2nd Amendment is another matter, and where things get sticky.

And for those of you wondering how 5M people can hold 325M people hostage, may I suggest it's because they, you know, have guns? And they'd argue if us non-gunowners want to protect ourselves from them, we should get guns too and be free to do so. It's crazy.

The three most powerful lobbying groups in Washington are the AARP (American Association of Retired Persons), the NAR (National Association of Realtors) and the NRA, according to a friend of mine who is a legislative aide to a senator.

Trouble is. The majority of the politicians are bought so that system is failing the nation
