I've just read these are rumoured to be in the offer for KDB.

I understand performance related pay but does a goal bonus turn a player 'greedy'? Particularly for a winger who should be concentrating on supplying goals. Should the goal element be those he contributes to instead of actually scores?

It did cross my mind to be honest. I'm sure there's a bit more complexity to it than it seems though!?

I can't see them offering goal bonuses. Soriano writes about the negative impact they had at Barcelona in his book.

At Barca they put in place team related bonuses, which I believe they have replicated at City.

He talks about paying a basic wage of 80% of the current market wage with bonuses taking potential wage up to 120% of the current market wage.
The bonuses were 1) for playing in at least 60% of games, 2) Qualifying for Champions League, 3) Winning league, 4) winning Champs league, 5) winning cup

Each bonus was for different amounts (Champs League win worth more than domestic cup win). If they played less than 60% of games they got no bonus for that and 50% of bonus if team qualified for other bonuses.

The 60% play time does not include when a player is injured. A player is deemed to have played a match if he plays for 45 minutes or more.

goal bonus and clean sheet bonus have been going on for years, however in KDB's case it will more than likely be bonus related to appearance and trophies won. They will now have collective bonus

Well if you gave him an assist bonus equal to his goalscoring bonus...

The general strategy since Txiki's arrival has been to reward winning trophies. He has overseen a lot of contract renewals that have sought to eliminate appearance bonuses from the top earners (they still exist for the young fringe players as an incentive to work hard and get on the pitch) and goal bonueses full stop as they are seen as negative for the reasons you suggest.

I find it extremely hard to believe he'd bin his principles for one player. He believes very much in a pay structure that incentivises winning trophies.

Great post, absolutely spot on!

I hadn't read that Soriano book but that makes sense to me.

I wouldn't expect a goal specific target but just saw mention of it in a tweet but know that could be bollocks. I wouldn't expect an pure assist bonus either as that could lead to not shooting (like the joke re Silva above).

His books a lot more interesting than most business management books! I got it when he first took over and it has been interesting watching him replicate the book almost page by page at City.

He even talks about how he tried to set up a franchise club with Barcelona in the States!
