A goalkeeper that's jittery, and is doubting whether to advance or not, makes the whole backline nervous, because they don't what he's going to do. Hart and Given were more traditional goalkeepers that stayed close to their line, made saves, and left it to the defenders to mop up. That's not Pep's style. There's advantages and disadvantages from both types of goalkeeping, but the main thing is that the defenders know where they stand as regards the goalkeeper.
