Good Transfers blog on City found on web (long read)

Interesting article. Makes you realise that our expenditure is sensible investment and is not excessive, especially if you consider that Chelsea were already a top 4 side when Roman bought them.

Hughes himself has already stated that there won't be another summer of £90m+ spending, which stands to reason: once you've built a squad, it's about maintaining it with 2-3 players at the most per summer, some of which will be lower-cost investments for the future. Also, if you are a successful champions league club, as we aim to be, you can put a slight premium on players you sell, as we've seen with Arsenal and particularly the rags, who get ludicrous fees for their fringe players. All that helps balance the expenditure.

Not bad:-) Hope this helps to educate all the critical voices out there

Expenditure at top clubs is ALL about wages - transfer fees are not a huge deal.

United and Arsenal's net spend on transfers isn't that high (because they're adding to good squads and can sell players for good money) - but the wages they pay are huge and that's money that goes straight out of the club.

The approx £150 million net we've spent on players this year is described as a one-off, yet United and Chelsea pay a similar amount EVERY year in wages, with Arsenal and Liverpool not too far behind. I'd expect our wage bill to at least match Chelsea's in the next couple of years.

Chelsea talk about moving towards sustainability, but as soon as we have a big five someone will miss out on the Champions League and that's £25-£40 million lost in a year.

Arsenal do not pay huge wages.

I realise that wage estimates are just that: estimates, but Arsenal's are frequently the second highest in the Prem. It's a myth that they have a small wage bill.

Yeah they are usually well up there but the wages they pay individual players aren't in the mega 150k a week bracket which i think is very risky.
