My main point was that a country with a population of 5.2 million isn't going to produce reams of famous albums and classic singles like The Colonel seems to be expecting them to.
And to widen my point a little, I'd say that most famous bands are synonymous with the city they're from. The Beatles, Liverpool. Elbow are from Bury but they're classed as a Manchester band. You get the idea.
I understand that The Jesus & Mary Chain were from East Kilbride (as I think were Aztec Camera) but I've heard many people lump them in with the rest of the bands Glasgow has produced over the
Anyway, here's a current band from Glasgow called CHVRCHES. They've had a couple of top 40 singles and their album's worth a spin or two if only for their knack of smashing out some great choruses:

Given the cultural similarities in the British Isles I think that it is a poor return. As I said, compare to Ireland.
Deserves another thread really but for me personally: the Boomtown Rats, Stiff Little Fingers and Thin Lizzy. I even liked some of Christy Moore / Planxty stuff and recently 2 door cinema club.
