Great put down from a City fan..

1 more for the team AND a comment:

THIS smart arse comment deserves an answer of equality smart-arsedness!

In the case of Manchester Airport, the two RUNWAYS are strips of level paved ground used for the landing and take-off of aircraft

Level? Paved?

From the Airport Notes:

RWY 5L/23R is "convex" (as in "has a hump") with the highest point being abeam Taxiway G/HZ.

BOTH runways ALSO differ in elevation from one end to the other by approximately 50ft...

RWY 23R begins at the north end at 249'MSL and ends 10,000' later at 200'MSL, a drop of 49ft

RWY 23L begins at the north end at 232'MSL and ends 10.007' later at 186'MSL, a drop of 46ft

The runways are also "grooved" which means they have grooves cut in them to aid in draining surface water and maintaining a high percentage of the surface as "dry" (in aviation terms) during periods of rain.

So, the runways are not paved and they are MOST CERTAINLY NOT level....

~ The edges of the runway are lower than the centerline (middle) of the runway, which is how the water drains out of those grooves and keeps it "dry."

~ The runways BOTH run DOWNHILL from the north end to the south end.

~ Runway 23R, the northernmost runway closest to the terminal, is "humped" from the 23R threshold to the 5L threshold at the other end, with the high point being close to the middle of the runway.

There endeth the exercise in pedantic smart-arsedness....and one more post on your way to 100!

P.S. It is 0400 here in Chicago, so must be time for bed, as I will be getting up to leave for London on the 4:17pm flight to arrive at 0600 at Heathrow for the match. Home to Chicago again on Monday, then back on Wednesday night, to arrive on Thursday morning to spend a nice long weekend and the League opener next Monday night!

P.P.S. Nice to see they added padded seats to my East Stand middle tier seat for this season! CTID!!
