He was good in My Left Foot as well did he get an Oscar for Lincoln ? which I haven't seen yet .

I would add there will be blood to that as well one of his best performances

Christopher Walken - The Deer Hunter/king of new york(I would also throw the dead zone in)
Jack Lemon - The apartment
Robert Mitchum -Night of the Hunter

If you're talking that film, then it has to be Vincent D'Onofrio.

My favourite performance is Robert De Niro in King of Comedy.

Everyone else has gone for a film performance but in my view the best acting performance of the last 20 years has been James Gandolfini's portrayal of Tony Soprano. Absolutely mesmerising performance sustained over a number of years.

The finest action of his generation and sadly missed.

Harry Andrews and Sean Connery - The Hill
Sean Connery and Ian Bannen - The Offence

Both of these are Sidney Lumet films, two of his best along with Serpico, Dog Day Afternoon, the Pawnbroker and Network - all of these contain superb performances from the respective lead actors Al Pacino Rod Steiger - whose performance in the Heat of The Night merits a mention - and Peter Finch.
