De Niro in Raging Bull was first thing that jumped to mind but he gave several stunning performances from Taxi Driver to The King of Comedy; which I would say were the greatest run of performances by any actor.

His "co-star" in Godfather II - Al Pacino - gave fantastic performances in the first two Godfather movies.

The scene when Pacino goes to the toilet in the restaurant to retrieve the gun hidden in the cistern so he can shoot the policeman
back at the table is truly brilliant. The emotions he shows whilst locked in that toilet are off the scale. Pure genius.

That is one of my favourite scenes in any film.

Likewise.

Up there with the story swapping in Jaws.

Vivienne Leigh in gone with the wind - she played the spoilt southern belle to perfection

Good shout that. Olivia de Haviland was her sublime self in the same film but she was even better again in Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte.
Which in turn reminds me of Rita Hayworth in The Snake Pit and Kirk Douglas in Ace in the Hole. Shirley Maclaine, too, for any number of performances but let's go with The Apartment because that gives me an excuse to mention Jack Lemmon and Fred Mc Murray.
