Greatest Guitarist

I guess it really depends upon what type of music you are into.
I like punk and indie music so my idols are people like Johnny Marr, Steve Jones, Will Sargeant but there is no denying the genius of Hendrix, Page, Townsend, Dick Dale, Mick Ronson and many many others.

24 years ago yesterday i was fortunate enough to see my all time fave Stevie Ray at the Apollo...great night and left that night looking forward to the next time i'd see him.

And for anyone interested he's just had yet another posthumous radio performance released 'the fire meets the fury'...no unreleased tracks and the quality isn't superb but a great post-drug era gig and worth the £8 on itunes.

It's obligatory to give Hendrix the greatest rock guitarist of all time award and justified although there's a lot of guitarists around with amazing technique but fast and tricky does not simply make for great music. Hendrix made some fantastic music and broke new ground and had an incredible style for his time but he's not my favourite guitarist.

It would be easy to list a hundred fabulous guitarists, many of whom have already been mentioned; my own top twenty (first five in order) would be:
