Greatest Movie Director

Jaws is a fantastic film; I just hope that Hollywood is never tempted to do a reboot of it, complete with a CGI shark. The clunky mechanical one used back in 1975 has a certain charm to it. Plus, the film has one of the most iconic lines in the history of cinema.

"Stop biting me you ****" ?

Leone
Hitchcock
Kubrick
Brooks
Scorsese
Tarantino
Coen brothers

If I could only watch one director's films for the rest of my life it would be between hitchcock and the Coens.

Perhaps they lack consistency but James Cameron, John McTiernan and Tim Burton made some of my favourite films from the eighties and nineties.

I was just watching the Jaws again after a long time and I still get impressed that this movie was made more than 30 years ago. This got me thinking how many different types of films Speielberg has made.

Do you think Spielberg is the greatest movie director of all time or is it someone else like Scorsese, Coppola?
48 years actually and to this day it is the greatest Movie ever made.

It’s certainly one of the greatest, and by that I mean top 5. The plastic shark is a bit clunky now and whilst you have to make allowances for when it was made, it is an impediment that does not affect contenders like The Godfather, which is my pick for the greatest movie.

I first saw Jaws on the afternoon of the day it was released in the UK and as a film going experience, it was as memorable and as much of an event as any I’ve enjoyed.

It remains a film that I will happily watch again.

I understand your irony here. Fine. I understand that you don't rate Lynch. Fine. No problem.
But ask yourself this: why did Steven Spielberg — who many on here and in the world consider to be the greatest living director — ask Lynch to do that role? And in the role of John Ford, who the young Spielberg clearly considered to be the boss of them all?
Or do you think that Lynch went knocking on his door because he needed the work?

I didn’t say that I don’t rate Lynch. I think the original Twin Peaks is great TV. I saw most of Lynch’s early full length movies and mostly thought they were ok - didn’t like Erasehead - but always found them a bit disappointing. I’ve not watched one in years so it would be interesting to see if I missed something first time round.

I’ve no idea if Spielberg chose him because of his directing prowess or for his acting skills but he was well cast as John Ford.

I’m afraid I am someone who believes that anyone who is anointed as the greatest movie director needs more than one hugely successful film on their CV because at the end of the day, the primary purpose of making movies is to entertain the public.
