Gregory van der Wiel

I know nothing about him, but that is a cool name.

Neither do I, never heard of him. But this is what the Daily Star report says about him:

NIGEL De Jong last night urged Manchester City to sign his Holland international team-mate Gregory van der Wiel.

Eastlands boss Roberto Mancini is keen on the £10m-rated Ajax right-back, who has just been named Holland’s Young Player of the Year.

And midfielder De Jong, himself a former Ajax player, reckons Van der Wiel, 22, will solve a problem position for City next season.

“I know that Greg is on our wanted list at Manchester City,” said De Jong. “I have pleaded with them to sign him, as we could use a good right-back.

“The tempo of English football will make him stronger still and I’ve recommended him to City’s management.”

Meanwhile, City striker Roque Santa Cruz admits the club have to be fighting for the Premier League title next season.

The Paraguay striker said: “I think the pressure is going to grow on us. We expect to not only do well next season but also to be fighting for the title.”

Santa Cruz will be under particular scrutiny after making just six starts last season following his £17.5m transfer from Blackburn as City were pipped for fourth place by Tottenham.

And he knows he will face even further competition when owner Sheikh Mansour opens his cheque book again over the next few weeks.

“I am sure we will see new signings and I won’t be surprised to see a couple of famous faces around,” he said.

Nervous Nedum said:
Always like Dutch players, no idea why. Hope to see him at the World Cup.

same, usually because they always seem up for it. They never really miss a shift. I think he could do a job for us.

actual quotes, interesting...

After seeing some highlights of him, yes. The kid has amazing moves and Dutchmen can play. Also, look at the other names who won youth of the year:

2000–01 Rafael van der Vaart (NED) Ajax
2001–02 Robin van Persie (NED) Feyenoord
2002–03 Arjen Robben (NED) PSV
2003–04 John Heitinga (NED) Ajax
2003 Arjen Robben (NED) PSV
2004 Wesley Sneijder (NED) Ajax
2005 Salomon Kalou (CIV) Feyenoord
2006 Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (NED) Ajax
2007 Ibrahim Afellay (NED) PSV
2008 Miralem Sulejmani (SRB) Heerenveen
2009 Eljero Elia (NED) Twente
2010 Gregory van der Wiel (NED) Ajax

Some fantastic names on that list. For 10 mil, I'd snap him up. He could be a steal.

I be honest I have not heard of him before but took a look on the Tube and looks great going forward but everytime they showed him tackling it was a foul. But I am sure he can tackle and also he looks like he could play right wing if needed to.

If Ned or Richards are going to be off this guy looks perfect. so comfortable on the ball and decent football brain...
