Grenfell tower disaster

8 years ago today since this tragic accident resulting in the deaths of 72 people a high rise, my daughter lived in one on the tenth floor until recently was so relieved when she moved out earlier this year.
I go past it on the tube to my office every now and again and i always look at it and wonder why the hell they haven’t knocked it down.

I go past it on the tube to my office every now and again and i always look at it and wonder why the hell they haven’t knocked it down.
Drove past it the other day and wondered the same. Is it having to be preserved as a potential crime scene / evidence etc until any litigation / enquiries have finished?

I think it's still there as a monument to the victims. The local authority won't knock it down until they have firm plans for the site, and I would guess those plans will need the approval of victim's families.
I'm not sure I agree the families should have the final say, but some are interviewed by the media every time the future of the block is discussed.

The BBC podcast about the Enquiry is absolutely brilliant, more than 100 episodes. It shows that the victims were let down by absolutely everyone involved in the management, refurbishment and the response to the fire itself.

A stain on our nation.

It was managed by a Tenant Management Organisation, so in theory the tenants manged it themselves, but in reality a lot of tenants were unhappy with the TMO and wanted them removed.

People blame the Council, Government, Fire Service, but the main culprits were the TMO.

Everything since Grenfell has focused on tenant empowerment and more consultation, but wasn't that what lead to the TMO?

I asked AI who was responsible for the fire.....

The Grenfell Tower fire was the result of multiple failures and oversights by various organizations and individuals involved in the building's refurbishment and management. The Grenfell Tower Inquiry report highlighted significant failings by architects, contractors, and government bodies in ensuring fire safety.

Here's a breakdown of the key entities implicated:
  • Studio E Architects:
Failed to recognize the combustible nature of the cladding and insulation used in the refurbishment.

  • Rydon (main contractor):
Failed to ensure the design was compliant with fire safety regulations and did not clearly define responsibilities for fire safety.

  • Harley Facades (cladding subcontractor):
Did not prioritize fire safety during the cladding installation.

  • Kensington and Chelsea Tenant Management Organisation (KCTMO):
The landlord, responsible for managing the building, demonstrated a "contemptuous disregard" for fire safety and failed to address resident concerns.

  • Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (RBKC) (local authority):
Failed to properly scrutinize the refurbishment design and ensure compliance with building regulations.

  • Arconic, Celotex, and Kingspan:
The manufacturers of the cladding and insulation were also criticized for the role their products played in the fire's spread.

  • Exova Warringtonfire Ltd (fire engineer consultant):
Failed to produce a final fire safety strategy and communicate it effectively.
The report also pointed to broader systemic failures within the construction industry and government, including a lack of oversight and a prioritization of aesthetics over safety.

Dubai :-( hopefully everybody got out safely.
The authorities said everyone got out. But they also said it was put out in 6 hours. I live directly opposite it and it was still on fire at 4am this morning (30 hours after it started).
