Guardiola fined £20,000 for wearing yellow ribbon (p140)

It wasn't created to support Pep though and if you make it about him then you undermine what it represents.

If you want to support Pep then make a lovely Pep badge or sing his name or something. Repurposing another cause which is massively important to other people (including Pep) as a means of supporting him seems really inappropriate to me. I know people want to back him, but the idea of 30k City fans turning up in yellow ribbons and virtually none of them even being able to name more than one of the politicians currently incarcerated, just doesn't sit right.

I think you are spot on and there are other ways to support Pep.

Semantics SWP, yes it is about supporting the jailed Catalan politicians, who are there because of their sedition, as far as the Government are concerned, however its still about Catalan Independence, Pep is a Catalan and he supports the quest for Independence, so its all tied in.. To be honest, I will wear a ribbon for a tongue in cheek, fuck you, to the FA
and to support Pep. As far as Catalan politics go, I have to confess I dont really know very much about it, i think also its just Blues wanting to ring fence our club against the ****s in the FA and to respect our manager for sticking two fingers up to the FA. If it was the moaning one or any other top 6 manager, we would not have heard a peep out of anyone...
Not semantics at all.

The poster said that if he wore a green ribbon in support of united Ireland then we’d all be pissed. That may be true but it’s not remotely the same thing. The same thing would be that we had an Irish manager that disagree with Teresa May locking up Gerry Adams for holding a democratic referendum in Northern Ireland.

Fucking joke. Anything to try and upset our domination. If it really is about the emblem, then ban absolutely everything.

But of course the flip side of that is it democratic if it is not supported by the central govornment and the rest of the Spain has not voted in the referendum or voiced a vote through the democratic process for the referendum to be held. These are the arguments why sports should not be politicised and institutions like the FA become moral arbitrators.

Just pointing out the wider issue here SWP and the fact on every statement the Fa etc will have to make judgements and different slogans, ribbons etc will mean different things to different people and probably sport does not wish to make those decisions hence the blanket ban (except the poppy of course).

There's plenty of yellow ribbons being made right now by a group on another forum. I understand they will be distributed on Wembley Way and donations for a charity (Marie Curie I think) would be appreciated. The FA may well regret their timing !

Would it not be better to collect for the With Catalonia group that are raising money to support the political prisoners maybe?

We also have players and staff who may not support Peps ideals. Any particular support for his cause may alienate others.

Who? David is from the canaries, Artetta and most of the coaches are Basque or Catalan and Diaz is Andalucian, all them areas are not particulary enamered with the Castilan regions.
They are collegues also and seem to respect Peps stand enough to still be working here with him.

Peraonnaly I believe if you don't support the movement supporting the freedom of tge politicl prisoners then don't wear the ribbon.

Support Pep by singing your heart out with his song, maybe this will get people up making noise insted of sitting in silence.

The FA could well be on dodgy ground here because of its view that Pep's yellow ribbon is a "political" statement. Thus it is held to be different from wearing a poppy, which we see as an act of remembrance, and from wearing the gay pride symbol, actively encouraged (and made compulsory on certain occasions?) as a sign of the rejection of intolerance and bigotry which have no place in sport. These symbols have no words and are exactly what they are and cannot, therefore, be at all offensive in the eyes of UEFA's new regulations. Similarly Pep's yellow ribbon makes no explicit statement and is simply, as Pep would say and has said, "what it is" - a yellow ribbon. Pep wears it as a sign of solidarity with two Catalans held in jail since the referendum without charge. Pep can certainly argue that he is not making a political statement or supporting a political cause but showing his support for a value which is accepted in Britain, every member state of UEFA and is championed by the UN. His support is discreet, makes no inflammatory statement and uses a ribbon which in many parts of the world, most notably the USA, is simply to give comfort to those who are held far from their homes.
