Guardiola said he felt he owed other players a chance to be in the squad instead

Sorry, is Pep playing sentiment and loyalty instead of his best team/s?

Just asking.

And he nearly scored so does that not make Pep correct?
Overall, I thought Claudio did quite well in a big debut cameo. I'm excited about his potential. KDB simply cannot be replaced adequately, because he was a genius on the pitch, but in time, maybe Echeverri can ascend to something approaching that level.

The key to this entire debate is defining what Pep meant by "owed", the original poster perceives it as something like "he's a good guy who's put in effort all season, he's not played much, so I owe him a chance for his big day out".

Whereas I perceived it as "he has put in the effort, showed he is what I need for this game, yes other players have played well, but I owe him the chance to play ".

One seems like an act of charity, the other is giving someone a chance based on merit. Very different things.

I'm not saying I'm right in my perceptions by the way
Thank you for posting this.

In answering the question of why some players (Lewis and McAtee) were missing from the selection team in the FA Cup final, Guardiola said he felt he owed other players a chance to be in the squad instead.
Do you agree with the concept that the manager owes all players participation regardless of the nature and importance of the game? I find it quite strange, especially to apply this concept in the FA Cup final.
The coach doesn't owe any player the right to participate, especially in crucial and important matches. The player may have the right to know the reasons for their absence to give the player a fair opportunity to train, develop, and compete for a starting spot, but I don't believe this is an absolute right.
This isn't the first time Pep has spoken about this matter. He has previously said he feels that he owes the old guards the right to play more. I believe this is one of the reasons Pep objected to signing players last summer and, thus, one of the biggest and most important reasons for our poor season-ending trophyless.
What do you think?
It’s really alarming tbh. It’s concerning how the kids who got us to the final were not even considered. I find it cruel. But it’s not surprising. His loyalty to the old guard is the biggest theme of this horrible season. Not much more we can say. It’s not a shock that even with new signings Pep will still play his favourites. Doesn’t matter if we’re 1 win in 14 or if there are injuries.

Some might think you are not a big Pep fan .

I've never once claimed to be a 'Pep fan'.

I've been very impressed and obviously grateful for the fantastic job he has done at City, but I've never actually liked and have no respect for the bloke as a person.

He's just another coach in a succession of coaches / managers at City. They come, they go. Some I've been a 'fan' of, the majority, I haven't really cared for as people.

Same with players really.

Are you dense?

Being in the team, periodically, does NOT trump being a starter!

YouDO know what being a regular starter mean, right...?
You can fuck off calling people dense. He has started regularly. Probably more than most. People disagree with you and you go off calling them dense. Get fucked.

What else shall I call you for not thinking in logical terms?!

He started 10 games, last year to give actual starters a break and became a backup. Most players, when they make an impact of significant note over an extended period, tend to stay IN the team, not drop to the bench.

The only reason he got an extended run was because of INJURIES.

So, with that in mind, is he a starter?

This really makes me worried about next season. Does Pep has the ability longer have the flexibility and ability to change our playing style and poor performance; some players, like Foden, are not the same. So I wonder, has Pep changed? Is he affected by his family situation? Has he reached the stage of saturation and exhaustion of ideas?
