Had Sven enjoyed the same level of investment?

I think some of you under estimate what a huge investment can do. Roberto Mancini and Sven would probably do about the same given similar investment. Yes, Clueless brought us down to 10th with a massive investment, but he's an exception (one of the few managers that can take a squad capable of top 3, and drop them down into mid-table) and we all know he's utter shit.

I think Sven, with the same money, and ability to replace the players (or whole squad for that matter) that contributed to the post-new years collapse would have seen him nearly or as successful as Mancini.

Di Matteo, not exactly known for his managing success at West Brom, went and won the FA cup and CL with Chelsea, and with another massive summer investment is top of the league. Again, Clueless was probably one of two or three managers in the past decade that would be able to spend 250 Million and still be mediocre (QPR is final proof of his terrible management).

I think it's easy to say it's all about the money but AVB had those same players and couldn't get them to play together. Liverpool invested a ton of money last year and couldn't even qualify for europe. You can't win a championship without spending big time money but spending a lot of money doesn't ensure elite success.

Sven wsa a adead man walking in Jan/Feb iirc and the wobble was a result of that. Sven carried on as best he could, but (allegedly) the players were pissed off at how he was treated culminating in a spectacular downing of tools at Boro later in the season.

If Sven had been given the opportunity to work under out new owners, I feel sure he would have flourished.

you're forgetting that Hughes got us to the quarterfinals of Europa League first season which cost points in the league considering we didn't really have a deep enough squad at the time to do both, Fulham at home in particular was basically a throwaway in preparation for Hamburg later in the week where we were brilliant, would have surely finished on more points if not for that.

Sven was decent but has done nothing since leaving us and even the second half of his year with us was apalling.

Talking of doing nothing since he left, have you seen the league table recently? To take a promising squad, spend 150m and finish lower in the table with less points is pathetic. Even if we beat a couple of Faroe Island teams in the Europa.

Pound for pound Hughes is the worst manager we've had since Alan Ball.

He did pretty good with Fulham though made a stupid decision in leaving them, we'll see how he ends up at QPR but it's still better than being sacked by Leicester..

Also we've had two goes at Europa since then with far deeper squads and haven't made it that far so clearly it wasn't an easy feat. Still amuses me how much hate he continues to get though after nearly 3 years so carry on makes for amusing reading.

I don't care enough about him to hate him, I just think he was a toss manager for us, and think he's a toss manager in general. Fulham finish top ten every year, Hughesless did no better or worse than everyone else who's had the Fulham job. I think you're probably over estimating how much of a shit the players, management and fans give about the Europa.

Sven is/was a better manager than Hughes, end of story. It's probably true that Sven's day as a top coach is over now as he's accomplished nothing for a long time but the fact he did better on the Thaksin budget than Hughes did on the Mansour budget says it all. Also, Mancini taking over from Sven would have been far more poetic as they have a close relationship. Sven had us doing really well for a while but there was no squad depth and unstable ownership.

That imo is what killed us after Christmas under Sven.
