Half the world's food thrown away

what can be done about it though? rubbish police?

as someone has said, numerous offers and deals that entice you to buy more than you need (and want) are part of the problem

Reminds me of this song:

Miraculous you call it babe, you ain't seen nothing yet
They got Pepsi in the Andes, they got Mc Donald's in Tibet
Yosemite's been turned into a golf course for the Japs
And the Dead Sea is alive with rap

Between the Tigris and Euphrates there's a leisure center now
They got all kinds of sports, they got Bermuda shorts
They had sex in Pennsylvania, a Brazilian grew a tree
And a doctor in Manhattan saved a dying man for free

It's a miracle, it's a miracle
It's a miracle, another miracle
By the grace of God Almighty
And the pressures of the marketplace
The human race has civilized itself
It's a miracle

We got warehouses of butter, we got oceans of wine
We got famine when we need it, we got designer crime
We got Mercedes, we got Porsche, Ferrari and Rolls Royce
Yeah, we got choice

She said meet me in the garden of Gethsemane my dear
The Lord said, "Peter I can see your house from here"
An honest man finally reaped what he had sown
And a farmer in Ohio has just repaid a loan

It's a miracle, it's a miracle
It's a miracle, another miracle
By the grace of God Almighty
And the pressures of the marketplace
The human race has civilized itself
It's a miracle

Like this is news. Western consumers are fucking demented and wouldn't know proper produce if it smacked them in the face. Half the professional adults I talk to believe pineapples grow on trees.

In supermarkets they're not looking for apples, they're looking for snooker balls. These are the same people who gorge themselves on bullshit dietary supplements in pursuit of 'vitality'.

Of course, the answer is education and learning to trust senses rather than labels. My primary school gardening classes put their parents and most teachers to utter shame in this regard, simply through growing their own fruit and veg and observing organic produce from seed to table. Most of it looks nothing like the bleached, ionized crap which adorns your average veg aisle.

The supermarket has done this to people, has hewn this rift and disassociated us from nature to the point where perfectly good food is wasted on so obscene a scale.

I can tolerate spurs losing, I can just about tolerate the skanky neighbour's but wasting food I hate.

I try not to waste any. Even if it starts to spoil I eat it, who cares. People are too nancy these days

I see a show where ugandans were eating tree bark and dirt because there was no food. We see dickheads throwing away bananas that have one black spot and bread that isn't even mouldy because of some wank sell by date

These days I find bread can still feel fresh but it's gone mouldy. It's all the shite they put in to preserve it. It keeps it soft but it doesn't stop it from going mouldy. Hovis toasty is the worst for this.

Most of us just eat feed at the end of the day. So many chemicals and preservatives that go into food. Our body isn't really geared for it.

I just stick loathes in the freezer, get what I need when I need it! Not had Hovis in years!

My misses has a habit of chucking away watermelons, been arguing over it for years. I should really smash one on her head!!! After touching her melons

-- Fri Jan 11, 2013 4:13 am --

The apples here you can almost see your reflection in. Organic must be the best option if you can't grow your own.

Squirrels wreck all my produce every year! Want to buy me a greenhouse?
