Happy Birthday Gio

Not blaming him at all for us getting relegated but when it mattered he went missing. A gem of a player when he wanted to be. He was eventually found out when he went to a lesser standard of football in Holland. I fully understand the hero wankfest a lot of for him however when you look at the bigger picture it tells a different story
Lesser standard in Holland? This was a time when Ajax were a major European power. They were in consecutive Champions League finals only two seasons before Gio arrived. He didn't play often there, only twelve appearances in two years, and when he did play it was in the wrong position:
He was originally signed as a replacement for Jari Litmanen, but Litmanen stayed at Ajax as his proposed move to Barcelona fell through. As a result, Kinkladze played in an unfamiliar left-wing position

He wasn't even playing regularly when we got relegated the second time. After Joe Royle arrived, he wasn't a regular starter. Blaming him, therefore, for that relegation is especially ridiculous.

What I remember of Gio, is a man who was playing at a club that wasn't good enough for his level, and yet still wanted to stay. What I remember of Gio is that he played for us something like 24 hrs after a Georgian international, in the 5-2 at Stoke. What I remember of Gio is that he scored the best goal I've ever seen in the flesh. What I know of Gio is that he still loves us, and has been denied visas when he wanted to represent us in Masters football. So, yep, I still like the guy.

Lesser standard Yes. Not the team he played for but the whole league is a lesser standard. Yes he was played out of position however according to some he can walk on water so should be able to play any where.

Of course he's not nearly as good as Silva but he was still an excellent player in his prime and in the right position, and he was very loyal to us.

Not doubting his ability one iota and i understand fans perspective with his hero status. I was at the games you mentioned and enjoyed watching him play. lets be honest there was not much else to cheer about

Was fantastic in very poor side , would not warm the bench for us now ?

I don't know, wet lettuce seems to fit the requirements pal....

As does piece of shit......

Actually it doesn't. Pete is one of the few from here who I've actually met. He's far from a piece of shit. He saves lives for a living and is one of the most genial blokes I've had the pleasure to meet.

Aside from acting like a wet lettuce, what do you do ?

He's remarkably abusive for a man described as "genial". He decided to bring insults into what had been a reasonable discussion about the merits of two City greats.

What you do for a living doesn't define who you are. I assume he is a fireman by what you posted. It's not at all relevant but I'm a teacher.

Yes am idiot but if u think Silva is better than Gio u also r a idiot

Merlin ha ha

Well that's me told....

I can only hope that silva can match gio's achievements. Hopefully his career can reach the heights of being relegated twice in three seasons, and playing for derby :-)

I think your problem is you are looking back with rose tinted goggles. He was undoubtly a good city player and was the one ray of sunshine in those 3 terrible years but there is no way he was the quality of our current side. To say he wold play instead of silva is one of the most ridiculous things I've read on this forum.

I would put bernarbia ahead of gio and silva is head and shoulders above both of them.

Even better , tell u what Shaun u r still 2nd favourite player after a guy who could past a team on his own, he was shit Gio

Happy birthday Gio fuckin love u

I've read this a few times and I still don't have a clue what it means.

I awarded you a wet lettuce badge.....a lettuce due to your ability this morning to be the first to start slagging off the merits of an ex player on his "BIRTHDAY THREAD". You could have said happy birthday pal. Instead you turned it into a "he wasn't as good" thread.....why, I have no idea pal, but for me its bad behaviour, 2 hr detention for Mr G.

Now lets be friends.

He called you a "wet lettuce" and you replied by calling him a "piece of shit"

Surely a man of your education can see who is actually being abusive.

I see you've edited the word "fooking" from the original insult. Very clever.....<br /><br />-- Sun Jul 07, 2013 12:44 pm --<br /><br />

No I am not slagging him off as he is a city great. I just disagree with the assertion that

1) his career was wasted as he was too loyal to city, he was 25 when he left and stayed only 3 seasons.
2) he is better than David Silva.
