Happy St Patricks Day

Modern Ireland, in part founded by a Hibs fan from Edinburgh. Nice.

A great day for every **** to show their plastic paddy persona to the full.

Don' forget.....

1. The great Frank Kelly, whom I saw on stage many times. He played Father Jack. (He was also the leader of the Ballymagash Urban District Council!)

2. Offaly, where I live, Dublin, where I was born and reared.

3. Aisling.

4. Richard Dunne.

5. No.

6. Turf is my main fuel.

7. See 4.

8. The Corrs

9. I’m the family’s Family Historian, so Yes. A number of my maternal grandmother’s family emigrated to England. Surrey mainly. So I’ve a lot of English cousins, among them the great Johnny ‘Budgie’ Byrne of West Ham & England.

10. Music and literature.

ST PATRICKS DAY BLUEMOON POLL

1) Who is your favourite Irish Actor? Cillian Murphy
2) Where is the best county in Ireland, and why? County Mayo, Specifically Ballina. (Although dogs bay up in Connemara is the best place)
3) Angela Scanlon or Aisling Bea? Aisling Bea
4) Who is your favourite Irish Sportsperson of all time? Barry McGuigan
5) Have you ever tried Poitín (Potcheen)? Yes, and I bounced off every wall on the way home.
6) Can you explain what an Irish sod of turf is? It is peat that is removed from the ground, dried in the sun and used as a fuel for a range stove. In rural Ireland, range stoves can heat the house, heat the water as well as cooking on them. The kettle will be hot all day. Turf fires smell lovely. You can actually buy turf fuel in England. They ship it over from Northern Ireland and Scotland.
7) You're playing in pub league side, against a bunch of nutters from Wythenshawe. You're allowed one ringer in your team. You can pick from either Niall Quinn or Richard Dunne. Which one? I would pick Quinn as a target man who would score lots of goals and hold the ball up when we hooved it up to him.
8) The Corrs or the Nolan Sisters? Andrea Corr
9) Do you have Irish ancestry? Yes, my Mum is from Ballina, moved over here when she was 17
10) What has been Ireland's greatest achievement? Its footprint on the world.

#10 is easy. Becoming a member of the EU. The Irish have milked that cow spectacularly well. :)

They've been a net contributor to the EU for several years now.
I'd say the biggest gain by Ireland has been the amount of giant pharmaceutical, medical device and computer companies that have set up base in Ireland.

THe goodwife Mrs Joe is a stone cold bog trotter, born and raised in Roscommon. We will be raising a glass sometine today. She's claiming Peter O'Toole as her fav irish actor...i thought he was from Leeds, she can have Chris O'Dowd or Maureen O'Sullivan as both from her town.
Biggest achievement is pretending that Porter was invented in Dublin.

PS Fav Irish author Flann O'Brien..
Seeing as you mention Roscommon, this is a picture from Covid where a supporter was watching Roscommon footballers over a wall.
Check out the gravestone bottom rightimages (6).jpeg
