ON THIS DAY

13th May 1989 City gained promotion.

‪1988/89 Second Division Trevor Morley unwashed match worn shirt from City’s 1989 Promotion clinching match away to Bradford City on the last day of the season.

Morley would score an 86th minute equaliser to secure City’s Promotion back to the old Division One in a 1-1 draw. ‬

Boy that was a nerve wracking game, I think Crystal Palce were 4-0 after 30 minutes in their game and we needed a point to get promoted.

The typical City way, 3-0 ht against Bornemouth only to concede 3 in the 2nd half for the 3-3 the week before, and 1-0 down against Bradford, only for a late goal in the 86 minutes by Morley.

Seem to remember the piss up afterwards was off the scale.

What a great day and what a crush getting through the gate onto the pitch!

The one and only time I’ve been on the pitch after a game. If I remember right the whole of Bradford was dry that day. Couldn’t even get a carry out from the Co op.

5 minutes left on the clock and we were doomed to spend another season out of Division 1. Having been well on top in the previous week against Bournemouth and heading back up, in typical City fashion we let is slip, and drew 3-3 meaning we needed a point to secure promotion on the last day of the season.

All down to Paul Cooper's quick thinking in snuffing out the Bradford attack and releasing the ball early.

Brian Clarke's infamous "...and Morley has scored the goal that could very well put City back in the top division".

Was at this - in the Bradford end. One thing I never quite understand when I watch footage of the goal. No player ever comes to congratulate Morley. I always wonder why ?
Yeah he mentioned this in his interview with Cheesy, I can't watch it now without feeling sorry for him

Most just collapsed in relief and a couple ran to the bench

I listened to it on the radio with my dad and younger brother. I remember being sat on the stairs in the house, nearly in tears, thinking we were fucking it up. When Morley scored I swear you could have heard the shouts from our house five streets down.
