Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has emerged as a contender to replace Marcello Lippi in charge of the Italian national team when the 61 year-old steps down after the World Cup in South Africa.
The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) is keen to announce a successor to Lippi, who led Italy to the 2006 World Cup, before the start of World Cup 2010.
Cesare Prandelli, of Fiorentina, was their primary target, but he is believed to favour remaining in club football and “90 per cent” certain to take over from caretaker manager Alberto Zaccheroni at Juventus.
That has forced the FIGC to examine other candidates and, though Mancini last week announced his intention to buy a family home in Manchester and sources close to the Italian insist he intends to see out his contract at Eastlands, it is believed Giancarlo Abete, the Italian FA’s president, is confident that Mancini could be tempted to return home.

Will be genuinely gutted if this happens.

Forza Mancini, forza celesti

Doesn't the article simply describe Mancini as a contender. In my view, he is far too young to be the Italian national team coach. More likely after his 3.5yr contract here ends. A more realistic scenario is Capello after England are dumped out in the Quarter Finals or Ancelloti with the Special One returning to Chelsea.

I was coming on Bluemoon this morning with my view on the Mancini situation and then I see this, It's exactly my thoughts and here is my theory.

We all know that there is something not quite right with Mancini's "three and one half year contract", everyone to date as settled on the idea that it was City that put these boundaries on the contract.

What about the thought that it was Mancini that put the clause in his contract, that it is for six months and then following the world cup, Lippi steps down and Mancini takes over. And in the event that Lippi doesnt step down or Italy actually do well, Mancini revertes to continue his three year contract.

What it could mean though is that all you Mourinho lovers could get your wish, providing we get chumps league.

I think this is a distinct possibility.

ok, so mancini will give up an unlimited transfer kity (which he will no doubt be given in the summer) to take control of an ever ageing italy. yeah, sure

I think the "half" a year extra is because he got the job in December, half way through the season, so he got 3 an a half instead of just 3 years, otherwise his contract would be up in the middle of a season, that would be absurd.
I genuinely think some are reading too much into it, he's got a 3 year deal, plus the half year to get him to that, that's ALL it is.
