Has anyone put their central heating on yet?

Anyone on here got an air source pump? We need a new gas boiler this year but with the government grants I was wondering if an air source heat pump is a better option? roughly £2k difference in price between gas and heat pump installation
Beware that you need to ensure your house is very well insulated. It works best with piped underfloor heating and whilst it can work with radiators they need to be significantly oversized as the water flow temperature is a lot lower.
It doesnt help that electricity is so much more expensive than gas as you cant (or certainly not to my knowledge) get an air source heat pump that falls back on gas if you need more heat, instead they all use electric which can get very expensive.

If you have solar panels and battery storage then an air source heat pump is maybe a good option as you're getting some of your electric for free.

If the government is serious about being carbon neutral they need to decouple the electricity price from the wholesale price of gas, which would make air source heat pumps more attractive.

Its an obvious statement but it depends how cold your house gets and everyones is a bit different depending on their construction and how well insulated they are. Our Victorian stone built gets cold pretty quick.

Currently our temperature when we wake up is around 17c and thats ok and bearable. We are getting by just now with an hour or so of the log burner in the evening. If I can stretch to mid October without the CH I will be very pleased comparing it with last year where our joint fuel bill for the winter was horrendous.
What temp do you think its time for the CH?

-10

Maybe

I have the central heating on all year round, but just 15 minutes in the morning during the summer.
This gives enough hot water to do the dishes and makes sure the pump doesn't seize.
Have lit the fire this weekend though and will be getting a delivery of coal, doubles and slack after I get paid so I'm ready for a cold spell

Got in bed the other night and told my wife to get the winter duvet sorted.
She refused due to hot flushes.

In my defence we've just got back from a hot and sunny kefalonia, and haven't reaclimatised yet.
Don’t know how old your wife is but Mrs H suffered badly with the flushesnfor a good 15 years, she’s 66 now and still gets them now and again, pretty terrible at times.

30 degrees to 9 degrees in a week , got to love this country, lol , i have gone soft as i am up at dawn in the garden usually but this morning it was chilly so i said nah and stayed in bed, prefer the cold so i will get back to getting up and no heating
Nick some Dipper shirts from that boozer in Brighton and burn them, double whammy, job done.

The temperature inside is the important thing and as you say, it depends on your household’s tolerance level.

Our tolerance level is keeping the house above 17 degrees. We can add more layers as necessary or add heated blankets etc.

It’s less important overnight, so we let it drop during bedtime hours.

Anything under 15 degrees when you are pottering round can lead to illnesses.
