A proper hatchet man would go through someone within the first minute and everyone knew what was coming. Someone like Goikoetxea from Bilbao was the classic hatchet man cos everyone knew what was coming.

This guy and Romeo Benetti of Italy (midfielder) are the hardest hit men I've seen in my 40 years watching the game closely.
Heslop reputed to City's hardest but before my time.
Stam or Jim Holton for United with Joe Jordan a mad dog of a striker.

Dunne would have been one if he was born some years earlier. Kompany has the physique to bully almost any striker but again, the changing culture and rulings wouldn't let it happen.

I think the same could be said for the fucking man from Argentina, who wears the Blue and White of Pellegrini's men.

I reckon Zaba would have been a right bastard in another era.

I concur with Claudio Gentile and Andoni Goikoetxea (who broke Maradona's leg and almost with a single tackle ended Maradona's career in Spain, for he was receiving such brutal treatment he decided to move elsewhere).

In addition, I'd go with Mark Dennis (formerly of Southampton), Jose Batista (Uruguay), Graham Roberts (Spurs/Rangers), and anyone who played for Wimbledon in the mid-80s.

Can't remember if Bulgaria's Trifon Ivanov was a hatchet man or if he just looked like a nutter with his mad eyes and beard.

France's Basile Boli headbutted Stuart Pearce in Euro 92. Not a hatchet man, but must have been trying to make a point there.
