Have we had a proper centre back since Kompany?

Because he isn't playing particularly well at the moment — and he's got an undeniable tendency to injury — people are a bit quick to forget the Rúben was absolutely huge in his first two seasons. And with John Stones, in the treble season, I consider that centre-half pairing to have been the best that City's ever had.
I personally had never heard of him before he came, so it was all the better as a surprise.
That absolutely isn't true. He joined us in 2020 so has had 2 seasons out of his 5 without a single injury, with 2 seasons just the solitary injury each time. Last season was by far the worst of his career.

Edit: bloody tables are messing up :(

Kompany for me had the "X Factor" in that some players put the fear of God in the opposition. He was a superb defender who could mix it when he needed to and his goal against United gave us the shot at our first title. His one v Leicester was incredible. He played like a fan on the pitch. As much as I hate to say it, VVD seems to have it at the moment - people are scared by him.

Of the central defenders we've had since, I think Stones is superb. Such a classy and clever player who also can mix it. Dias has slid since we bought him and just doesn't seem able to lead any more.

We've had loads of fine centre Half's since Kompany though none were identical to him.
We couldn't have won what we did without them, generally with teams that conceded very few goals.
Last season they were virtually all injured.
To be honest Ottamendi at his best was at the heart of a successful team and subsequently won the World Cup and I'd say he was our least good regular centre half and still pretty good at his best.
