I remember my first introduction to the art of pipe smoking all those decades ago.
My father in law to be had a routine, he first cleaned out the pipe with his special pen knife with all the smoking gadgets on it then cut himself a chunch of tobacco (condor from memory), this he rubbed between his palms to eventually achieve a loose tobacco consistency. He tapped out his pipe, making sure he still had a correct cinder at pipes junction with its stem.
When satisfied, he then carefully packed the loose tobacco info the pipe. Next he gave the pipe a few sucks then made numerous attempts to light it with a box of Swan Vesta matches.
Eventually it was ignited and he took a few satisfying drags on it. Invariably it would need relighting but it was all part of his pleasure concerning pipe smoking.
Later in life whilst in a management position and pre HR days I was instructed by the Works Manager never to employ a pipesmoker because they took too much time fill light and enjoy it.
I understood where he was coming from.
