Fairly common practice John. My mate tells me that you just deny everything with a large amount of indignation and they always refund the charge.

Or if you see something you like call down and say it's not in the room when you first arrive. They'll either note it or bring up another.

Nope. I use the shampoo but why would I want to nick a tiny bottle? I have pens. They do them in my local corner shop. Quite cheap as well.

Was in Tokyo for world cup in 2002 and heading to England's first game in Saitama. Scouser latched onto us on way to game and asked how to get to stadium. Being diligent we had researched the route and offered our advice. He was so grateful he allowed us to delve into his binbag of pilfered mini-bars from the hotel, apparently an entire corridor had rooms open for the cleaner and our Liverpudlian friend saw an opportunity. I've still got a cheapo white towel from a hotel in Puglia.

I always take the pen, and then leave a note on the pad of paper it came with saying thanks for the pen.

At least I'm a polite thief.

Think it through, that serves no purpose if they remain in the hotel.


Take them with you and, voila, free advertising for the hotel after you've left.

The Mere Court , for example, has 'this pencil was stolen from the Mere Court Hotel' printed on the same.

The mal maison leave a card in there bathrooms telling you to take the toiletries with you as, 'they're yours'
