Heatwave Europe

By the time this awful weather ends, we'll all be experts on the Jetstream.

For weeks now, the UK's weather has been unsettled - with widespread rain, cooler temperatures and an autumnal feel.

This is all while much of southern Europe has been enduring dangerous, back-to-back heatwaves that have seen temperatures top 40C and large wildfires.

The two are linked - and crucially it's down to where the jet stream is. So how long will this weather last?

(if you read the next paragraph you might kill yourself :-( )

It looks as though the unsettled weather will continue through much of August, says Gemma.
"There are signs that more prolonged drier, and slightly warmer, weather is possible later in the month, but more likely into September."

Why do you keep referring to the weather we’ve had over the last month or so negatively?

It’s not awful. Rain is great! It’s lovely to be out in it, and it's great for our crops (although does increase the number of slugs).

It’s cool out there for Summer, but it’s still shorts weather but not hot which fatigues you and makes everyone stink of sweat. Parks are quieter, fewer people out walking on the roads, everywhere looks more lush and green than when we have the brown grass of a hot Summer.

Proper British Summer, lovely!

The only bad point is that it stopped us winning The Ashes.

That study by the CDC National Center(I know!) for Health Statistics Compressed Mortality Database includes seasonal deaths from things like Winter flu rather than as a result of just cold weather.

The NOAA in America did a study on deaths related to weather and not just seasons, that shows the opposite to the CDC findings

I trust the lancet mate :-)

Totally agree. Has been perfect weather as far as I'm concerned for the last month or so. Great for running, stops the neighbours polluting the area with their stinky barbecues & generally washes all the scum off the street.
The only thing I'd change is some slightly cooler nights for a less sweaty sleep.

Ours was Canceled with jet2 but our friends with Ryan air wasn't!
No, I booked with On The Beach (never again) and they would not let me cancel. To be honest apart from one night when the air got a bit smoky, it’s been fine. Although the hotel has been very quiet as most people cancelled.

What a terrible July we had. I know why with the polar north jetstream just sat below us quiet happy but it still pissed me off. After June i was getting my hopes up for a great long hot summer. Effing pissing it down every effing day, just eff off and be hot again please.
Agreed worst July I can remember and August doesn't look great until the middle of the month!
