Heaviest home defeat you've witnessed either at Maine Rd or the Etihad

The 0-5 against the dippers, who used to hammer us every time we played them early 80's.

I remember us beating them 1-0, a game that might have ended the sequence of thrashings. I think Kinsey scored.
Yeah, I recall the 1-0 win as it was so unusual! My recollection was a Clive Wilson goal, Christmas time game but could be wrong.

Whilst not the heaviest defeat I've seen, the 4-0 v Liverpool in the FA Cup in the late 80s hit hard as we fancied ourselves for Wembley that year

Great post!

Moore better than Beckenbaeur in your opinion? I’m too young to have seen either.
Yup.. it's only my opinion, for what it's worth, but Bobby Moore at his peak was imperious.

As a player, I liked Beckenbauer (up there with Baresi, Maldini and Moore) For me, though, Moore was the best reader of a game of any defender.

Were he playing today (as with our own Colin Bell and Paul Madeley of Leeds, both of whom cruised around the pitch) you'd have to break the bank to buy Bobby Moore.

And he wasn't just a great defender, he could play in front of the back four like Rodri. And be as good as Rodri.. who has been the greatest player on the planet for the past three years.

That Bobby Moore never was awarded European Footballer of the Year sometime during the period 1964-70 was an absolute disgrace.. of course, in my opinion!

I thought it was Steve Kinsey but that could have been when we had another shock result up at the Dippers home as we won 1-3 over Christmas ?

I remember losing to Leeds at Maine Rd in 2001 or so. The year we were relegated with Joe Royle as manager.

It was something like -8C on the day, I was pissed off with the performance and, feeling cold and miserable, I left early for only the second time in my life with us losing at the time by 2 goals.

I got to the pub and had a real rant about us losing and being dog shit, and when I finally shut up, an old boy quietly said ' calm yourself down and and get yourself a pint. And they didn't lose 2-0. It was 4-0'. I had to smile at that as the whole pub cracked up with laughter.

I've only left a game early on 3 occasions, and I've missed 2 goals each time. Wolves in 1972 when it was 3-2 and ended up 5-2, the Leeds match, and the game at Leicester in 2016 when we were losing 4-0, and it ended 4-2.

My worst away defeat was at Wolves in 1973 or so. 5-0.

Yeah you're right, just checked. Clive Wilson scored on Boxing Day. The same season as the FMC final against Chelsea, drawing Bury in the LC, and playing the away leg at the swamp. And beating spurs home and away, just under 28k at Maine Road (cough Swales) but only 17k in the return fixture at WHL.

That's a stretch, I'd say (if I can butt in). The problem is that no English fan has seen Beckenbauer anything like the number of times they got to see Moore. So it's difficult to compare them fairly. Probably the best English defender ever.
Moore def renowned as best english centre half ever ,but Colin Bell led him a merry dance at the Boleyn ground in our 4nil win 69/70 season I think.
Moore was asked to msn mark Bell and he dragged him out of posistion all over the pitch, made him look a carthorse.

As far as best English defender is concerned I always felt Kevin Beattie at Ipswich, when fit,was a close 2nd to Moore rugged tough defender but very skilful too and would often carry the ball stylishly out of defence and could play long accurate 70 yard balls.... ,and score goals, something Moore wasn't renowned for..

Back on topic, the Oldham defeat August bank holiday ,under Keegan, iirc 1-4 was hard to take, no one on the Kippax that day would have believed we'd go up after that beating...but we did.
Roger Palmer and a certain Ricky Holden did the damage that day
Holden slung in high arching crosses from the left to the back post where Palmer rose like a salmon to head in. Palmer hat trick.

I was at the Maine rd arsenal defeat and remember clapping them off half time and full, they were different class....and went easy on us after 20 mins, thankfully. 1- 5 ,butcoukd have been so much worse.
