I'm saving for a new laptop but all the different OS' and models are confusing me.
I've decided to get an AppleMacBook because I've heard they're really good (are they?) and the cheapest of the Apples.
However, there are 'the new generation' of MacBooks in the Apple store and there are also loads of different ones on Ebay like 2.0 and ones with MacOS X 10.4.11 and Linux(?).
I don't really know the differance but I don't want to save money to buy the older obselete model or pay over the odds for a new one when the old one does the same job.
I'm not very good at laptop shopping.
Any advice please?

The latest version of OSX is 10.5 a.k.a. 'Leopard'. All the new aluminum MacBooks come with OSX 10.5.

I have one and It's simply amazing.

As a guide the new basic spec MacBook is £949 from Apple... so if you're buying on eBay, should be a bit (but not much) cheaper as they've only been out a couple of months.

<a class="postlink" href="http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/home/shop_mac/family/macbook?mco=MTE3MjA" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/home/s ... co=MTE3MjA</a>

It all depends what you need it for. If all you're going to do is access the internet and play the occasional low spec game then you'd be mad to pay more than £300 for a new lap top IMO. Apple lovers swear by their MAC's, but frankly I think they're overpriced and finding support/software is more difficult than for Windows based lappies. It's all down to personal taste though.

I was thinking do I really need to pay £700 to browse the web and type up work. I've got to admit though I've had a go on my mates Mac and they're well smart and really fast. I think I might go for and older refurbish Mac. If not I can always download Safari and pretend :)
Thanks for the help.

I support MAC's, and they are a lot easier than PC's unless when something goes wrong. You typically have to use the disk utility to try a repair and from that, reinstall the OS. Not as easy to trouble individual problems. They are good, i wish the users were a lot more clued up on them though. A lot of the users i support just buy one because they have an IPOD, and do fuck all research before buying one, then have the ignorance to try and learn and expect you to teach them everything in a 10 minute phone call, by which time they are moaning at paying for a national rate phone number (6-10p a minute)!!! Sorry, that last sentence is truncated but newbie MAC users get right on my tits. I don't think you'll be in the same boat mate as you can spell and sound like you have a brain, other than the people i talk to for my job. They are a piece of piss yet a lot of them still manage to fuck it up. I wouldn't trust half of them with an etch 'o sketch!

Macs are great, but get one with an Intel processor. All the latest software for mac is made to run on an Intel, not the old G4 processor.

I know what you're saying!

I'm a recent mac convert... it IS quite different to using a PC, however I managed to get by by using some of the Mac forums to help me out. I've had it a few months now and I'm flying on it. Its a top bit of kit.
