Henry signs for new York red bulls

A lot of you are probably going to laugh, but the MLS is better than you think. 10 of the 13 players that hit the pitch for the United States against England were, at one point in their respective careers, employed by MLS clubs, and as all of you witnessed, didn't flinch or back down playing the EPL all-star squad. Players like Donovan, Dempsey, and Howard have made the jump over the pond and proven their worth.

Anyway, FIFA will be very happy about this. The United States is a gigantic untapped market that they'll be keen to try to capture.

Well, they are American you know?

They're not going to go straight from an American academy to a top league in a different contry when they're 18...

I'd say prety much 100% of players have played for a team in their own contry, unless they're imigrants that came in when they were like 10 years old.

Maybe that's why LeBron James did not go to New York - could not compete with the "Soccer" superstar.

Nah mate, if he came to the Knicks, he would have to pay over $10 million in taxes to New York State and around the same if he went to the Nets. There's no income tax in the state of Florida :-)

Absolute legend of the English game, one of the best players the Premier League has ever seen, the best striker for me personally.

Good luck to him.

Is it just me or is the MLS becoming a graveyard for old pro's?
A bit like the place where Elephants go to die?
Or am i being unkind to elephants
It's like it was back in the 70's don't know if it's always been the case tbh. It could just be that the MLS has a higher profile now since Beckham went.

and MUCH more importantly, Dwayne Wade stayed in Miami, so Chris Bosh took a pay cut and went to Miami... if LeBron wanted to team up with those guys he had to go there. well done Knucks btw letting David Lee go.

MLS is different from back in the day when Pele and Cruyff were in the US. for one thing, back in the day, there *weren't* much in the way of decent home grown players in the league. now, signings like Beckham and (possibly) Henry are finishing touches on a sane, live-within-our-means plan to building teams and a league. this means developing home-grown players even if only for economic reasons. as someone pointed out, everyone plays in their own country early in their career, true... but the quality of the US national team now compared to 1994 has to tell you something about how effective the MLS has been in developing talent...

i have it on good authority that henry will moonlight for the knicks after they were so impressed with his handling skills
