got a budget of about £300-600 for a decent audio player,is it better to build something up or just go for a system?
I am not a techie but fancy something decent maybe including a deck

started looking at Denon M38 DAB with Q Acoustic speakers
any suggestions?

Separates all the time but you can easily spend £600 on a pair of speakers.....have a good look at some What-Hi Fi's if you have the opportunity

Separates no doubt about it. Richer Sounds is the most popular (shop on deansgate) but have a wander into Superfi on Bridge street. I went there to get my leads ages ago and they were sound and sorted my banana plugs for me there and then. Both prices are pretty similar though RS probably shades it, but you can arrange to book yourself into their shop for a demo where they'll help you out trying out various separates combinations so you can hear how they sound together. Might be worth waiting til the crimbo sales though? Gonna get myself a tv after crimbo from one of these

good call....spent bucketloads over the years at RS but always get my B&W speakers from Super-Fi.....the place is like a sweet shop

always separates ... bought first separate system 30 years ago ... the amp is still working - a Yamaha amp. - way better value for money ... you could get 10/15 + years outta each piece. Replacing speakers every so often.

A few years ago i'd have said go for seperates. Nowadays there are some great gadgets that will wirelessly stream all your tunes to any room in the house with exceptional quality by utilising your pc and/or phone.
Have a look here

cheers guys I am in Edinburgh so will pop into Richer Sounds here and have a look although last time it seemed to be full of TVs ( tellys not crossdressers)
as for the sonos stuff all my music is on vinyl or cd

People have been trying to replace separates for decades, and not managed it. If you prefer separates, you will never be talked into something like a Sonos, or God forbid a Bose. However, if you want less leads, and nice looking boxes, the Sonos are the way ahead. I know people who stream kit through their TV and are happy with that.

Myself - separates, and won't be convinced any other way. Someone in work at the minute is into his technology and said that it has been proved that ITunes Lossless is just as good as CD quality, and the only thing missing is inaudible to the human ear. Well that's bollox to me, as I've listened to both, and definitely get a better sound from my hifi, and I do from an IPod (with a good vehicle for it as well).

Oh, and the shop opposite Super-Fi in Manchester is the best. Their staff are brilliant, and won't let you spend a fortune on something if they know they have a cheaper model elsewhere that will do the same job for you. I didn't get that kind of service from Super-Fi.

If you just want it for vinyl/cd's then seperates is the only way. Richer sounds will have some seperates they sell as a 'system' for a decent price. I'd pay most attention to the speakers and choose the ones right for your preferences (lots of bass/ crisp sound etc)
For the amp i'd make sure it had seperate bass/treble/balance controls and terminsals for 2 sets of speakers (switchable). Make sure it has headphones socket for easy connection of your laptop.

These are THE best value for money speakers bar none:
