Red is +.

It won't kill your amp if you connect them the wrong way round. It'll just result in the speaker being out-of-phase, which most people would struggle to hear anyway unless you're in a perfect room with minimal reflections and sat in the stereo sweet spot.

Loo

Look like standard 4mm speaker plugs to me.
Show us a picture of the back of the amp.
It's a Linn LK 100 first pic is my leads other pics stock photo.thanks

If your Sony speakers have the sprung push fit for bare wire connectors on the back your speaker wire may be too thick to fit.

What sort of budget do you have in mind as that will help narrow down choices and make a big difference to what is recommended ?

With mechanical components and transducers (Turntables/cartridges/speakers) you generally get more bang for your buck. With everything else, either it works, or it doesn't. I don't disagree that certain manufacturers crate a 'signature' sound in the way they implement their output stages, making them warmer or brighter, or that due to impendence mismatches certain separates don't work well together, but in reality, you can get incredibly clean signal reproduction relatively cheaply.

I have the speakers just not sure how to wire them up yet.
Don't fall for the '10% of the cost of your system on cables' nonsense. A good connection and a low resistance insulated conductor of sufficient current carrying capacity is more than enough. If 2 cables sound different, one of them is broken.

Used to love the hifi shop near moon under the water around early 90s. Maybe Hutchison HiFi?
