High line and pressing

It wont last long in the prem. I give it 5 games before we revert to last years methods.

Oh dear! Arsenal and the rags have been playing with a high defensive line for over a decade. Lasted long enough for them.

They have done it with 2 fast CB and a very mobile defensive mid. I don't see these strengths in our team at the moment.

Barca and Dortmund are the current masters of the high line/high press game. Hummels, Subotic, Pique, and Puyol are no quicker than Vinny/Nasty/Lescott.

It's not just the speed of the defence though. It's also the ability of the team to press. You might get away with quick defenders and not great pressing, or good pressing and slower defenders. Lack of pressing and slowish defenders though and you're going to have a few problems.

Arsenal have very fast players so the high line does not work as well as it does on most teams. Even Barcas super side from a couple years ago had their high line exploited by arsenal ( mostly Walcott really) so I'm not too worried.

You said it won't last long in the prem. It will and it has done with those two teams. You say they've done it with fast CB's, can you tell me which one of Arsenal or United's centre halves are quicker than Vinny or Nasty? Similarly, which one of their defensive midfield players are more mobile than Fernandinho or Rodwell ... ?

The truth is they don't really play with defensive midfield players in the manner in which we've done in the last few seasons under the Italian. United won the league with Carrick as their deepest lying midfield player and he's neither mobile, nor quick. Arsenal ... well again Arteta is neither quick nor mobile.

Personally I think it's a lazy British mentality to panic about high lines. It's a bit like the nonsense repeated every few months about zonal marking. Also you've done our defenders and midfielders a huge disservice ... particularly in comparison to the two teams I've just mentioned. Neither has a midfield which can touch ours. Defensively ... well unless you think it was solely down to the genius of the previous coach that our record was so good, then you've got to give plenty of credit to the players who have ensured we have had such a good record. I trust those players to do just fine once the season starts playing with a higher defensive line than they have done previously.

I said somewhere else I do think we'll ship more goals than we did under the Italian, but then I expect we'll score more and be a much more entertaining team as well as a winning one.

If you think the lack of pressing against Arsenal was indicative of the season to come then you're mistaken.

If you think our midfielders don't have the legs to press quickly and effectively then you're mistaken also.

Give it a few weeks, you'll be able to see for yourself. Who knows maybe you'll come to be confident and positive for the season as a whole then rather than being so concerned ;)

I made no comment regarding the Arsenal game as I didn't see it.

My few concerns, on the whole, relate to the manager rather than the players. Hopefully those concerns will disappear as the season progresses.

If your going to press high it's no good just pressing the man with the ball. The whole team, and I include Yaya in this, need to press and mark all the opposition so the ball carrier does not have an easy pass. We are not doing this to well. Also as "city raider" has said, when the other team have easy possesion you have to drop back and get in shape quickly. I watched both Bayern and Dortmund do this in the CL. It was almost telepathic and we all saw how effective, but it looks like it needs commitment and plenty of practice.

So what exactly was the point of your post then in relation to City?
