'Jumping the broomstick' was a way that poor people got married back in the day. If they couldn't afford a 'proper' wedding, they would ceremoniously jump together over a broomstick that lay on the ground as a way of saying "I take this person to be my..."

Hence the saying 'living over the brush.' At least, it used to be said of people who lived together but were not married. No one even notices now, but back in the 50s/60s, it was either shameful or daring, depending on your viewpoint.
