There is a god Barry's gone!!!
This club has always had a great bunch of holding midfielders over the years with a few of experienced to finding there feet to then become the greatest in there position.
The club seems to have failed to get the great back up to Rodri or they seem to have thought no need to as he is so good.
I remember when we had a De Jong and Barry competing for a starting spot then add in your Fernando then your Fernandhino and Rodri to this no understudy or break out talent. I won't put Gundogan as a holder nor Koavic they ain't that player so the failure of Kalvin Phillips seemed to have stop us going for this type of player as Rodri was so great. I am guessing after this set back Pep and the club will not leave us short in this position again. I know we will come good again. Just about getting the leaders back out on the pitch again.

Rodri scored 9 goals and got 11 assists last season from deep. If there was ever a sign to bring in a more defensive player alongside him and let him go forward more, that was arguably it. And then we would have had cover. Easy in hindsight though and hard to convince anyone decent to come when you're literally competing with the world's best player.

100%.

The solutions are not easy, but critisisum from the match day threaders is !!

Javi Garcia criminally missed from the OPs list (yet fernando in) of the last decades DMs

Repeating old failures, we never replaced Fitzroy Simpson for years and look where that led us

My younger boy’s middle name is Fitzroy. My wife tells people he’s named after the Captain of HMS Beagle from Darwin’s expedition - in reality I got it from Fitzroy Simpson and by the time she found out it was too late.

in Pep's mind and system everybody is a holding midfield player

the days of having a normal 4.4.2 setup with 2 centre backs, 2 fullbacks, 2 wingers, 2 strikers, 2 midfielders are long gone, I use to say learn and know your role in the team so you can do it in your sleep, Pep wants total football from everybody and to learn everybody else's role even the goal keeper has to play outfield.

The simple game of doing the basic things that you are in the team for can sometimes be the best way to play

Pep said if every one was fit Stones and Akanje would be the pivots. Not too much wrong with that, I suggest. The system relies on a top class holder and Akanje is a unit!
