Has anybody been on holiday to Croatia?

The wife wants to go to Lapad this year for our holiday and she is dead set on it, but it doesn't look like somewhere i would want to go. Not that i have anything wrong with the place it looks nice but i like nice food and everything seems to be stews, stews and more stews!

I will need some convincing so i was wondering if anyone has 1st hand experience of the place?

Cheers

Lovely place, food is much more than stews, more Italian influenced as its only the other side of the Adriatic. The Croats can sometimes seem a bit cold and abrupt, but thats just the language, generally found them to be friendly. Transport works well locally, its cheap and easy to use.

Croatia of late has got a bit of a name for itself as a place to go for the people with a bit of money, so its restaurants have evolved to cater for that market.

A bit down the coast you get the bizarre world of Montenegro where the uber wealthy like to take their yachts and spend their ill gotten gains. The only problem is its rife with monied Russians, so whilst it has some really pretty towns it is spoilt by the brash 50yr old Vladimir's with thier 18yr old Svetlanas.

Dubrovnik is amazing. Best of both worlds with being able to explore the fortified town whilst also having some amazing hotels and beaches nearby.

It's not cheap these days so expect to pay more than Greece etc for food and beer.

Lapad / Dubrovnik are beautiful. I've only been once so far but will definitely be returning.
I found the local food to be pretty good but there's lots of international options too of its not to your tastes.
The Adriatic coast is amazing, the rocks (and lack of sand) makes for the clearest water I've ever seen.
The people are lovely. They are reliant on tourists for income and so behave accordingly.
Avoid Dubrovnik when the cruise ships are in. But that goes for any port city...

I went to Makarska last summer with my wife and teenage daughter, fantastic place and felt very safe I saw no police around at all. Lots of places to eat out or just chill for coffee. We walked in to the the town every night for dinner and to watch the street entertainment. Spent a day in Split and the island of Hvar.

Hmmmmm i was hoping you would all say it was rubbish so i could go somewhere else!!

I'll just tell her i've been told it's expensive for this year, but to be fair you are selling it to me a bit more.

Thanks

Split. Went with Wales and had a ball.

My eldest interrailed round Europe a few years ago and said Split was crap and you're better going to Dubrovnik
She did mention that Plitvice Lakes national park was well worth a visit if you're into white water rafting, coasteering etc

We have an air bnb booked for Lapad in June 2024.
Cannot wait to get there and explore Dubrovnik. Get in a day trip to either Bosnia or Montenegro too.

I would agree regarding Plitvice but disagree about Split. I found it a really enjoyable city and actually preferred it to Dubrovnik.

Had a fortnight in Hvar a few years back, most enjoyable and free beer in the bars if you mentioned Davor Sukor.
Accommodation we had was very Titoesque at the Palace hotel - resident pianist tinkling away in the background with Bill Gates popping in for tea from his yacht in the harbour - but lots more choice these days I believe.

We all enjoyed Split. It was very nice. Lucky with the weather and great people too.

The Croatia fans clapped us back in to town.
