I stayed in Macarska (sp?) which used to be a seaside resort for the rich commies years ago as a "lads" holiday during uni. Unfortunately it was at the end of the holidays and "pink rinse" fortnight...
The place was beautiful, the Adriatic sparkling but nay birds...
A couple of years ago had a long weekend in Dubrovnic, which is beautiful. Stayed a bus ride away from the old walled city up on a hillside overlooking the port in a great sc apartment - had a great time!
The island of Hvar has some great hotels (alegedly as a chum used to work for the co. that owns most of it!) - I would love to do island hopping in a yacht up and down the adriatic coast....
