Am I right in saying rule is 8 home grown player?

Do you think the rules is holding City back now?

Richards - Injury prone, never rediscovered form over a few years ago
Rodwell - Injury prone - still think he could offer a lot in midfield or at CB if ever stays fit and gets regular games
Clichy - Form is streaky at the moment, I dunno if this foot/toe injury is a major ongoing problem or exactly what the injury is?
Milner - Rumours of clubs interested in buying him in the summer, is he happy with his role n the squad?
Boyata - Is he going to cut it at the top level?
Lescott - On his way in the summer it seems
Barry - Already as good as gone
Wright - Just making up the numbers

???????????????????

You forgot Joe Hart.

As for holding us back? You have to say that it does limit the depth of squad somewhat until we start getting some talent coming through the academy.
Oh, and Milner's going nowhere.

I dont think it will be a huge problem to be honest.

Hart, Clichy, Rodwell, Richards, Milner and Wright are all here to stay currently, just leaving us two players short. Sell Pants and get a homegrown second string keeper, and get Luke Shaw in = Problem solved.

Luke Shaw is widely tipped to go to Chelsea

The 'home grown' quota isn't a specified number as such, except in that no squad can exceed 25 players of an age of 21 or over at the start of the season, and each squad can have no more than 17 foreign born 'over age' players in it, unless any such player was brought over three years before reaching 21, such as Clichy. This is where you get your eight home grown players from. It's a common enough misconception, and there is no rule to say that a club must have any home grown players in the squad. If it so wished, a club could just operate on the maximum of 17 overseas players, making up the bench from an unlimited number of under-21s from here or abroad. That might not be too bad an idea if a club cannot find any suitable home grown over 21s, and your list here just echoes the state of our national team. Apart from Joe Hart, it would be a struggle to find any suitable recruits who could add something to our team at this time.

We've got some good EDS players coming through too: Huws, Facey, Wabara, Evans, Pozo, Lopes, Rusnak, Gunn

wouldn't be surprised if Pantilimon leaves and is replaced by a homegrown goalkeeper, that way the keepers can fill 3 of the places alone.

Richards, Lescott, Barry, Rodwell and Boyata could all leave in the summer. Milner too perhaps. Going to be an interesting summer seeing how the 8 places are filled, especially given Txiki's/Soriano's reluctance to pay the inflated prices for average British players

A slightly obscue question, but does anyone on here know the HG rules well enough to know if Eric Dier would count as HG if we signed him? He's English in every way, but moved to Portugal when he was 10 to join Sporting Lisbons academy. He's just broken into the first team there and if he carries on playing like he has this season, then he'll be a future england international, but he's only played a year of football in England. Would he count as HG?

I was going to say yes because he's English but apparently the answer is no.

"According to the Football Association, a home-grown player is defined as "one who, irrespective of his nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to the Football Association or the Football Association of Wales for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons or 36 months prior to his 21st birthday (or the end of the season during which he turns 21)."
"Under-21 players are not included in this quota so are therefore eligible over and above the limit of 25 players per squad."

At what age is a player allowed to be "registered" with a club?

That said you're only allowed upto 17 'foreign' players who don't qualify as homegrown and our squad has only 15(?) who fall into that category.

Player (home grown)
Aguero Del Castillo, Sergio (No)
Boyata, Anga Dedryck (Yes)
Clichy, Gael (Yes)
Demichelis, Martin Gaston (No)
Dzeko, Edin (No)
Luiz Roza, Fernando (No)
Garcia Fernandez, Francisco Javier (No)
Hart, Charles Joseph John (Yes)
Jimenez Silva, David Josue (No)
Jovetic, Stevan (No)
Kolarov, Aleksandar (No)
Kompany, Vincent (No)
Lescott, Joleon Patrick (Yes)
Milner, James Philip (Yes)
Nasri, Samir (No)
Navas, Jesus (No)
Negredo Sanchez, Alvaro (No)
Pantilimon, Costel Fane (No)
Richards, Micah (Yes)
Rodwell, Jack (Yes)
Tchuimeni Nimely, Alex (Yes)
Toure, Gnegneri Yaya (No)
Wright, Richard Ian (Yes)
Zabaleta Girod, Pablo Javier (No)

That's bizarre, but I guess he wouldn't count, even though he lived in England for 10 years, because he wasn't registered to an English club for 3 years in that time. Very strange, I imagine you could appeal it and they'd make an exception, but still a bit odd. It was mainly a hypothetical question with Dier as the example, but he's having an absolute mare tonight
