House of Lords - Bashing the Bishops

The fundamental problem with this country is that it has never had a proper revolution and thorough reform predicated upon Enlightenment principles.

In consequence, we are still lumbered with various obsolete and indefensible feudal aspects in what passes for our constitution, of which this is one.

But if you want to drag this country into the 21st Century, you're an extremist/lefty/commie.

On the other hand, having 26 people in the House of Lords who aren't government appointees may not be a bad thing. Apart from the sexuality issues and agreeing with most of the medical profession on euthanasia, the bishops nowadays are mostly liberal (e.g. on asylum and poverty and human rights). Thatcher thought they were Marxists!

I don't agree with much that Kier Starmer says, but I think he is right to disband the house of Lords when he gets in.

I can't believe this today: the Lords may block powers to stop those d*ckheads walking slowly on roads to moan about fossil fuels - which is pointless if you look at what is happening in China - and it is so clearly what most people want to happen:

What a surprise that you think this way...

Do you think it is right for people who find a loophole in a law can walk slowly in a road, causing traffic jams (which actually causes more pollution than smooth flowing traffic) because I can't understand it myself.

Do the new laws apply exclusively to extinction rebellion and their offshoots?

Or do you think they could be abused by the police and governments to curtail the rights of protesters more generally?

Protests are meant to be disruptive and attract attention.

I guess they are 'general' laws so I take your point, I would be quite happy if they could just target E.R. and the other similar ones - but how could a law be drawn up so specifically?

What annoys me is during the pandemic there was a protest about Sarah Everard and that was dealt with decisively (using the social distancing rules) yet now the pandemic is history, the police just stand and watch as these eejits cause disruption. I bet they wouldn't dare try it in China....

You mean the metropolitan police battered a load of women?

Perhaps we could get some tanks to run over protesters...

And that's a bad thing because...?

The point I am making is China are building more than half the worl'd new coal power plants. Climate change needs to be dealt with by the United Nations on a global level. These anarchists disrupting traffick in the UK are just pi$$ing in the wind and it should be stopped and the Lords will be wrong to stop it being stopped.
