How can I find out if someone died?

Why?
If he is alive, Unless he has given power of attorney to someone or someone or the state has assumed guardianship then his property cannot be sold without his full approval.
Or he’s dead and if he left a will the executors have sold it or if he didn’t have a will and no family the state has sold his property and pocketed the proceeds.

They've asked me to visit them (whilst apparently in there and with covid-19 apparently we can only meet outside in the hospital grounds) but she's a known for being a total bullshitter/manipulator, was hoping to find out if I could "fact check" before making what could possibly be an unnecessary 300+mile journey

Well if you know where she is contact the ward or her and get her to give permission to them to speak to you. Should make no difference whether she is sectioned or not though, visiting arrangements re COVID are the bigger concern
