How did bands acquire their names?

Lol i went there when i was a nipper. My Nan lived in Reading and we used to go there 'cos it had a wave machine..... wooooo!

I think Noel was touring there with the Inspiral Carpets, and that's what inspired, (sorry) him.

I only know The Ordinary Boys comes from the Morrissey track of the same name and from thestoneroses.co.uk;

The Stone Roses were born, with Ian on vocals, John on guitar, Andy Cousens now relegated to rhythm guitar, a friend called Pete Garner as bassist and, via an ad, Alan Wren (Reni) was recruited to play drums.They chose the name, The Stone Roses, as an amalgamation of the previous band incarnation English Rose and those doyens of rock 'n' roll The Rolling Stones.

Regarding The Ordinary Boys - never heard of them until about 3 months ago,but they went to the top of my list of what I would regard as "new"groups by doing a cover of one of my favourite songs -
Rudi's In Love originally done by Locomotive in 1968.Can someone post a link to either version on youtube cos I don't know how to do it.Thanks.

Manic Street Preachers - got their name when the local tramps used to call james dean bradfield the 'manic street preacher!' when he was out busking in cardiff city centre as a teenager.

Maximo Park are naved after a Park in Maimi where Cuban revolutionaries met. Maximo Gomez Park

Simple minds - named after the line 'she's so simple minded' from bowie's jean genie.

Vampire Weekend - Named after the lead singer's attempt at a short film in which Cape Cod is attacked by zombies and vampires. The main character of the 'film' was called 'Walcott', hence the lyrics on the song of the same name. Info courtesy of an interview and some cracking live songs with a string quartet on pitchfork.com
