How do we resolve the Brexit mess?

Beth Rigby making Jeremy Hunt increasingly flustered as she keeps raising the issue of Brexit. Hunt repeatedly refuses to accept the OBR’s figures on Brexit, but she fails to ask what his own specific figures are that allow him to reject those of the OBR.

At least she is trying hard to pin him. How much longer will we get to hear about all these wonderful opportunities without any of them being delivered. Probably until the next election, then we can enjoy a new list from Starmer that are equally undeliverable all in the quest 'to make Brexit work'. They are pulling against gravity and at some point politicians will need to grow the fuck up and properly reevaluate our relationship with Europe.

I agree, Starmer will remain in lockstep with the Conservative position until the general public is so far ahead of it that it’s in his party’s electoral interests to change.

Hunt looks understandably shaken by the questioning because, at heart, he knows it is an unmitigated economic disaster. When other more flappable MPs start getting the same treatment, then it’s going to be even more excruciating/enjoyable (take your pick) to watch.

On that point, sooner or later, a journalist is going to start asking Ministers how much more could be invested right now, not in 10-20 years, into the NHS if Brexit hadn’t happened? How much more could the Government be giving right now to public sector workers if Brexit hadn’t happened? And they need to be asked for the figures; if they don’t have them, why not, and what the hell then are they basing any of their answers/forecasts on?!

These MPs championed Brexit then and they need to be made to accept responsibility for it now. Once such questions are asked of the Conservative, however, Labour will have to be asked the very same and that will place them in an equal bind. Veterinary certificates won’t be enough to stop a qualified nurse having to rely on food banks.

Unfortunately, I suspect the UK will be facing a few more years of political immaturity before its politicians even think of growing up.

If only we had a media that accelerated the process :-(

I’ve been rather taken aback by just how quickly the media have started pulling at the Brexit thread. Hunt only delivered his budget, with accompanying OBR report, on the 17th, and almost immediately prominent interviewers started tugging. They have been cowed for years and starved of any data, we all understand that, but that situation is changing. Will it happen fast enough to alter the actual political landscape? Probably not. But it is a welcome start.

She absolutely dismantles him, the interesting bit at the end is that Hunt believes he can turn the U.K. into the next Silicon Valley. The software development sector struggles to recruit developers and the skills gap is huge and growing ever bigger. It’s got that bad they were looking at aligning software development up there with medical professions such as doctors and nurses when speeding up visa applications for sectors experiencing shortages. If this ever does reach fruition, the numbers on immigration will need to go up. Another pipe dream that won’t happen as the perpetrators of the down fall of this country since 2010 will either be on the opposition benches or not an mp at all by the time the next election is done.

Interviewers need to be more like Jules Winnfield in Pulp Fiction and say ‘I dare you, I double dare you!’ when politicians start mentioning becoming ‘the next Silicon Valley‘. To name but a few, Canada, China, Israel, France, and even the United States all talk about creating ‘the next Silicon Valley’, and it’s more likely to be in the US or China than in a country that’s chopped one of its own economic hands off. Your use of ‘pipe dream’ is apt; they must have been high on opium when they came up with these ideas.

I hope they don't tug too hard. I wouldn't want to see a stark bollock naked Jezzer - it'd probably be as terrible a sight as a start bollock naked Matt Arsehole.

Our rivers are the filthiest they have been in decades. After such hard work to clean them up it’s really tragic.
Maybe not for this thread but I was pleased to see Chris Yates had the guts to link Brexit with the increased pollution problem in the Angling Times this week, a publication which I would guess has a high number of Leave voting readers.
