I agree, Starmer will remain in lockstep with the Conservative position until the general public is so far ahead of it that it’s in his party’s electoral interests to change.
Hunt looks understandably shaken by the questioning because, at heart, he knows it is an unmitigated economic disaster. When other more flappable MPs start getting the same treatment, then it’s going to be even more excruciating/enjoyable (take your pick) to watch.
On that point, sooner or later, a journalist is going to start asking Ministers how much more could be invested right now, not in 10-20 years, into the NHS if Brexit hadn’t happened? How much more could the Government be giving right now to public sector workers if Brexit hadn’t happened? And they need to be asked for the figures; if they don’t have them, why not, and what the hell then are they basing any of their answers/forecasts on?!
These MPs championed Brexit then and they need to be made to accept responsibility for it now. Once such questions are asked of the Conservative, however, Labour will have to be asked the very same and that will place them in an equal bind. Veterinary certificates won’t be enough to stop a qualified nurse having to rely on food banks.
Unfortunately, I suspect the UK will be facing a few more years of political immaturity before its politicians even think of growing up.
