How do we resolve the Brexit mess?

It’s not just the case that the standard of living is declining in the U.K., it’s the fact that the standard is also rising in East European countries, albeit slowly. Sharing wealth in the European Union has always been about redressing the inequalities, be they West to East or North to South. That is always going to take time, but, ultimately, it will create a block that is economically more prosperous. Still, get those trade deals done with the US, India, and China and it’ll be small beer…

The US have no interest in us but plenty in the EU. India and China are siding with Russia in the war - given our support for Ukraine I can't see any deals there any time soon either

The US will always dangle the carrot of a possible deal and get the U.K. to trudge along, but it’s never going to make up for the lost GDP. Similarly, the closer the ties in the Anglo-Saxon world become, the more difficult it will be to get ties with China. India remains a possibility, but that will come at a huge cost in visas.

The scary thing is, so many people are still in denial.

This country lives on trade. We cannot feed ourselves and there's not enough land to change this. (Apart from the fact that tea, coffee, bananas, lemons and such like will not grow here at an economic cost.)

We have exhausted our natural resources (to a very large extent) and have a huge population for such a small land mass.

Trade deals demand compromise at best. You cannot have all your own way, as most of us learned at infant school. When you are in a weak position (Like a nation that has foolishly given up its existing trade deals.) your bargaining powers are poor, especially when dealing with the big players. The chances are you will get a shit deal or no deal at all. In the modern world, you need to be part of a bloc. Even the Tories have admitted this, by seeking to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership, as madcap a scheme as has ever been considered by a British government. It makes the Groundnut Scheme seem like a piece of Bismarckian genius by comparison.

This is the reality, and there is no simple solution that will put everything right tomorrow. The pragmatic way forward is to realign with the EU and work our passage back. This means swallowing a lot of pride and is unpalatable for many. But in the words of Margaret Thatcher: 'There Is No Alternative.' And there isn't, except for a worse option like becoming a complete subordinate of the USA.
